tell me about your 1190

I've been having a look at the 1190 today and I've got to say i think build quality looks better the bm :(

But do i want this instead !

Well after 12 months and 8500 glorious miles I've sold my 1190 and bought a Ducati MS
Not quite ready to lose the ride of a 17" front wheel , and I like a shorter wheel base.
As Davy as posted else well I've not clocked up so many miles for a long time on a bike.
Engine has bags of power , probably too much for the chassis/suspension , I had the electric sussies and even on sport I felt the bike dived a tad too much , and it's so bloody fast you can Easily get upto crazy speeds very quickly.
Would definitely recommend the ktm to someone that was interested in that sort of bike , IMHO far superior to the GS I had before it
Also didn't like the pr4's I put on the bike , felt much harder than pr3's .the contis were better.
Looking forward to the Ducati
Anyway got some bits for sale , will stick in for sale section when I take them off on Monday
Ktm smoked touring screen
Puig little screen thingy (transformed the bike for me)
Orange reservoir clutch and brakes f/b &oil cap
Akrapovic can
Givi rack adaptor

PM 'd you.

I already know about the Ducati , a lot more agile in the twisties
Never had the confidence /grip you get from the a smaller front wheel , where sticky rubber is easily available

i finally fitted the R&G rad guard that's been sitting in my office for several weeks yesterday.

ever so slightly tricky getting the zip tie top mounts on without removing the tank :augie

So did I. Wasn't easy though.

A small bonus though as I found a bit of trim digging into the wiring loom, so I modified it to avoid future issues.

I have a 2011 Triple Black which I must say I Love and has never let me down, had a test drive on KTM1190 and all I can say is WOW this is going to be my next bike handling is sublime electronics work a treat and well the power is awesome, you have to have a go on this machine.....
having ridden the GS WC, GSA WC and being a very happy owner of the old TC GSA, i have to admit i think you are spot on in your conclusion.

but...

i am currently in the irrational grip of the urge for something different, so BMW is out. the S10 is too boring, the triumph is too ugly and the ducati is a ducati (and expensive). that rather leaves the 1190 or keeping what i have.

mod update

fitted a scotoiler a few weeks back - jury still out, but leaning towards leaving it on. always seems to be putting out too much or too little, and requires constant fiddling. the recommended one drop per minute is miles too much, and seems to vary on it's own in use. maybe it's the heat?
excess oil fling not so much on the wheel where i expected it, but on the shock and rear cylinder. on the plus side, the chain looks nice and clean and not covered in an abrasive mix of sticky gloop and grit.

finally ordered some luggage. went with the asymmetric andystrapz soft bags.

when i bought the ergo seat a while back, i was just delivered the seat with none of the electrics. been chasing it up for ages with Bikers Jersey via email. got around to phoning them today, and it seems i've been mailing their parts guy who's been sacked. anyway, did a deal where they don't have to hunt down the parts i'm never planning on connecting, and i get a quite decent partial refund :)

BTW the seat is a massive improvement over stock in terms of comfort.

saw a fabulous looking 1290 Super Duke at poole quay on tuesday. he's had the wheels done half white/half orange like the one ktm showed but then bottled on production :drool

Stick with the Scotoiler, once you get used to the fine adjustments they really do work, better chain life and less adjustment.

i thought the scotoiler was going to have to go back, but the no vote yesterday means we can keep scottish oil after all :)

I've had my 1190 for four months now, have just gone over 10,000 miles and I can honestly say I'm really very pleased with it. One up or two up with camping gear it's just fine. I've had one warranty issue which was a porous clutch cover and one handling issue. The handling issue was due to aerodynamics rather than weight, I went camping one up to the Alps for a long weekend, left the panniers at home and used a 49 litre Ortlieb Rack Pack instead which I secured across the pillion seat, this caused a serious weave above 90mph which was totally cured by strapping the bag on length ways.

It's as comfy as my 990 which in turn was slightly more comfy than my '09 GSA, handles well, is economical, carries pillion and camping gear with no fuss, has ace brakes (especially after a 990), has 9,000 mile service intervals and lastly I've not yet said "this could do with a bit more power" :) It's been to the TT, Scotland a couple of times, Wales numerous times and I've done two European trips on it, a week solo and a couple of weeks two up. Conti TA 2's are good until the last couple of mm when the handling goes downhill, I've has two rears one I took off at 4,000 in advance of a trip to Europe and the second lasted 6,000 miles but it was on its last legs. The front lasted 10,000 miles but by then it was seriously V'd and down to the wear limit markers. Had I not been heading back from a longish trip I'd have changed the front and rear probably 500 miles earlier. They also grip well wet or dry.

One more thing - you really don't need a heated seat!!!

I,ve got a similar issue with my rear tyre which has done 4300 miles and only looks about half worn. I am going on a trip to Spain next week ( doing approx 2500 miles) and debating whether or not the tyre will last.
I think it probably will, but I don't want to have to be looking for a tyre whilst I am there, especially with the complication of the TPM's and rubber rim seal.

This rim seal tape thing seems a real bodge to me - I honestly can't see how it could be reliable. I think for conventionally spoked rims, running tubes would surely be a better solution (although, can tubes tolerate the speed / heat?).
