The Bad, The Good and The Ugly!!!

The corrosion on my 1150 was awful. Fork Brace, front engine cover , rusty spokes I could go on.

That's your owner error for not looking after it properly then:blast

Micky's 110,000 mile F8GS is spotless, because he looks after it

You obviously don't or didn't:D

No - but they do seem to be better built than the stuff you've spunked £12-£15k of your dosh on, only to be badly let down & hassled

I'll take the 1150 route personally as they suit me and look far better than the scaffolding covered bike you're riding

Going by the above photos, I think had it been my bike, I may have mentioned it when I took it in for service ... if I remembered?
Every bike I ever had suffered some corrosion in it's first winter. I'm sure a few 1150s did also, as some I have seen some look shocking now.
A new bike for a small amount of cosmetic damage is quite absurd in my opinion & only pushes up the entry fee if you think about it!
But a new bike it was - So what is your problem with that?

If BMW did a run of 1150s, how many would the sell? Imagine standing in the showroom, new GSA next to an 1150 that is a couple of grand cheaper. would you really take the quarter tonne 80hp slug?

You clearly love the 1150 .. I respect that! :beerjug: But your slating of all later models is getting a tad tedious now.
BMW are selling more bikes & winning more races than I can ever remember. You obviously don't like this move into the mainstream, but many do including BMW.

Thanks for the analysis:thumby:

They could have just sent some new crank cases to my dealer and told them to swap them or as they did offer and will still happen to my old bike, they are replacing the whole engine which I would ultimately have had to accept and would not have lost any sleep over.

What they did, however, was go the extra mile for me the customer and came up with a deal which I am 100% happy with. To be honest I cannot think of any other manufacturer who would have done the same. :thumby:

Indeed ..... I doubt that Triumph would offer to even replace a spoke FOC on your Scrambler's wheels if one went rusty or broke (which they do) :blast

I would guess that it's cheaper for BMW to replace a few bikes where the quality is below par rather than increase the specification and tighten quality control for production of all the machines.

There was talk a few years ago about BMW no longer passivating alloy components on 1200's prior to painting which virtually guarantees that corrosion will be rampant. Saves money though and if it saves more than the increased warranty costs it looks like a sound business decision.

What is does do is demote BMW from premium manufacturer status and I believe that it was JB was alluding to. You used to pay a lot for a BMW compared with other brands but you got something exceptionally well engineered and designed to last. These days BMW are priced pretty much on a par with other brands and not surprisingly they are of similar quality.

how many LCs have been sold so far ? Upwards of 30/40,000 ?

how many warranty replacements ?

how many 1150s have been sold ?

.

I tend to spend my time riding rather than cleaning them. The point I'm making was the 1150 also had issues with corrosion and this is nothing new.

Any bike will corrode if you don't look after it.:rob JB has a 10 year old 1150, with NO corrosion, yet there are plenty of 1150's with corrosion. He looks after his bikes.:thumb The ones that I've seen, haven't been looked after. I ride my LC all through winter, and make a point of NOT using ACF50 or any other corrosion protector, just give it a wash off after riding on salty roads. It's a pain, but it's worth it.

I've had two LC's, both ridden through the winter, unprotected (:P), and not one spot of corrosion on either.:beerjug: The OP's bike is clearly a manufacturing fault, but at the end of the day, if you look after your bike, it won't corrode. You only have to look at the amount of corrosion on any ex demo dealer bike thats been run through the winter, and look at the way they clean their bikes to see why.:rob

A bit off topic, but I did some sea fishing a month ago & used my Leatherman Wave quite a bit.
Anyway, took it out it's pouch yesterday & clearly didn't rinse it in fresh water as it's covered in corrosion.

That is what salt does the Stainless steel, so what chance has paint got?

Thanks for that, Kevan

In a nutshell

Manufacturing Cost saving v potential Warranty Cost

.......always happy to give JB the chance to get up on his soapbox :soapbox: although he must have nearly worn out this particular soapbox out by now :D:D

Having only had the latest bike 3 days will have to see how this one gets on in terms of quality of finish ;)

Enjoy what you ride whatever it is :beerjug:

Quickly going back to the, '...ugly' theme:

Why have they fitted those forward facing handbag-snatchers to the crash bars? Will an un-braced / triangulated tube really protect the bike?

I expect to see Humvee offering miniture handbag decals to be stuck on the side of the tank. One for every handbag snatched.

No different to the old model GSA just the other way round - suspect it's got more to do with style or the lack of it :augie

JB's soapboxes are of the older style, built to last :)

Interesting thread on ADVrider Face Plant, a guy on a 12GSA was filtering, a car started to move into him and in his attempts to avoid it he caught the back of the vehicle in front with his handbag snatcher. The bar was bent back onto his leg as he launched over the handlebars, nasty result and lucky not to loose the leg.

Corrosion

Hi Paul I also have the same corrosion that you had. Contacted BMW today and am waiting on a reply. I did ask my dealer whats the likely outcome and was told a new engine. I was wondering how you justified not taking a new engine as a replacement. Also you said they gave you full value of your bike, meaning they offered you market value? Many Thanks Neil
