I guess its a good bike if you want something fast to blat between Surry latte houses.:blast

But you can't really say it has any character,unless you count the vibes (Oops-forgot,BMW made you and rick a special bike without any.Vibes that were so bad on every other XR that they redesigned the bike for 2017)

The reason some of us ride KTMs is because they have a certain something,call it character,call it what you will....

No inline 4 really has it,though the MT10 with that glorious cross-plane motor certainly did have something.

I just like V twins,which is why probably 90% of my bikes in the last 15 years have been twins,mainly Vs.

My favourite playgrounds are the Alps and Pyrenees and I just love the way you can roll on and off the throttle on a big V twin,and let the engine braking do the work for you-something I missed when I took my MT10 for a 3000 mile mountainous blat last September.I also like the 21/18 wheel setup for feel and turn in on tight hairpins.

I don't need 160+bhp that the 1290R will provide-the 95 ish on my 950 Super Enduro is plenty,but it'll be fun.

Think of the 1290R as taking the best bits from your GSA and XR and combining it into one bike.

Fuck knows if I'll like it,but my hunches are normally good....

I do get the bit about in line 4s and the rolling off engine braking of that big V twin though

If it's anything like my 1190 it has very little engine braking, well not what you'd expect from a 1200cc high compression V twin anyway..................it was one of the things I first noticed when test riding the 1190.

I know how you all enjoyed the Africa Twin thread so much,especially Engineer and his blinkered chums

Anyway,my KTM dealer told me today that my new 1290R is being built next week and should reach here end Feb or very early March,so should definitely have it in the next 4 weeks.

It's a keeper !!! At least till the end of April !!

I think it looks great and could be a distinct possibility next Christmas when they're looking to do deals.

My 690s are great, have a certain personality and sense of fun.

Yes I fitted a Cyclops bulb a while ago, massive difference!
I've been doing loads of work on it, suspension, electrics, subframe, etc etc costing a small fortune and countless hours work but ever time I ride it its a better bike and brings a smile that no other bike can.

That's it I think.Been like that pretty much since 2008/9
 
My list is flippin endless now Martin, I have just changed the superb sounding carbon Mivv exhaust for Akras so at least I can have it quieter when needed.
Temporarily codged my Scott damper while waiting for a different set up from Oz. Changed to higher bars and raised too. Concepts seat.
Tank was expensive but found one in UK.
Fuel and water pump, RR, clutch slave, wheels, rack, jetting, footrest and more all sorted, rad guard..... the end's in sight now hopefully.... oh yes getting some custom graphics made for 'Dog's Bollock' and I need to dive in to check valve clearances :D

Why fuel and water pump ?
 
Because they WILL fail at some point.

I've ditched the points in the fuel pump for a Dr Bean electronic substitute but still intend getting a spare.

Water pump shaft get worn at the seal, this leads to water in the oil which leads to a collapsed paper oil filter which leads to..... 🙈
I replaced mine with a CJ designs hardened shaft and new seal etc.

Also about to change the balancer shafts seal as a precaution :)

I hope you're right, as I thought pretty much the same thing about the 1290S being the best bits of a regular GS and an XR.

Initial reviews of the new bikes seem positive.

Just about to order some Bumots for mine,as loved them on my AT and don't like KTM's offering.
