I'm looking for recommendations for tyres on an R9T . I've tried conti RAs - didn't like the feel. Bridgstone 023 - only lasted 2000 miles and went off badly. I'm looking for tyres that are good for ' spirited ' riding in all weathers and last a bit longer.

Bridgestone T32 or if you want to save a bit of money, the T31.

T32 is their premium sport touring tyre. T31 the revision before. I wanted T32 for my R1200RS but they could not get a pair so I had T31 instead, which were fitted to my S1000XR when I bought it. Used them on my trip to Spain in Sept/Oct and more recently on cold, wet roads in Mid Wales. They are very good and I would hope to see 6-7000 miles from them.

This type of tyre will give you the best compromise between grip in all weathers and mileage. Others to consider wou0dl be Michelin Road 6 (or 5) or the Metzeler Roadtec 01 (maybe SE version). In mid Sept, these were more expensive than the Bridgestone at North Shropshire Tyres.

Avon Trail Rider AV53/54 on mine, I like them.
TKC80 looked good but would regularly set off the traction control when damp.

I,ve got R/A 3s on my R9T gs 4K miles and still plenty of grip I only use the bike in the dry so cannot comment on wet use. But I do have Metzeler Roadtec 01 SE version on my S1000xr used for touring in all weathers and as above they have proved brilliant 7K miles 4mm tread left mostly with panniers and 160 BHP little m/way mileage so worn evenly for me worth the extra.

Also recommended, used on my old Yamaha S10 so fairly comparable weight etc great tyre.

Avon Trek or Trail riders are great tyres

See if Dunlop do the Meridian in your size......strange looking thread pattern......but Jaysus, they are good.

On a gnarly looking bike......I would have a look at the Dunlop Mutant......faultless tyre by all accounts. Will be trying next after my second set of Meridian are gone.



The above mentioned Avon are brilliant but don't last particularly long.

Question is, which RnineT variant do you have, as tyres people recommending that are suitable for say Scrambler or Urban GS, might be totally wrong for your early or current RnineT classic, Pure or Racer.

I know, I used the original version on my R1150GS as I had no intention of going off road or wanting to look as if I went off road. They transformed the bike compared to Tourance. I placed the OP in this category based on his past history...

I’ve had TA3 on GSA and now two sets of RA3on my 1290 Super Adventure S. I think they are great. Managed to get around 5.5-6k miles out the rear too. And having owned the SAS now for nearly 5 years covering nearly 19k miles, I am comfortable with pushing it a bit, but I am far from riding god.

I was surprised the OP does not like the RA4 but humans & tyres are a funny old thing. Some people will go for life avoiding a brand due to one incident that caused a little heart flutter. The poor old tyres get the blame not the other variables such as road surface, a cross wind, poor observation, excessive speed and of course the rider's lack of skill. My hated brand is Michelin as most of my punctures have been when using Michelin, especially the PR series, so I have never used the Road series!

That's interesting a friend of mine had a PR5 on his 1200gs WC and had noting but punctures. He ended up with 2 rears on the go as our local tyre specialist refused to repair one with a puncture so he brought a new replacement and took the original home and later plugged it ended up repairing the new one after a few weeks had 3 further puncture retired that one, then refitted the original same again 3 more punctures Changed both front an rear to Metzelers no problems.

Common knowledge that PR tyres are easy to puncture. I know a bloke who’s got a K1600. He had PR5 on it, and had nothing but punctures with them.
Changed these for Pirelli Angel GT and never had another puncture.

my experience was mostly on my R1150GS using PR2 Trail. Of course, this was also the time when I was travelling 33 miles each way to/from Cardiff whilst a postgrad at Cardiff uni. Often riding past queues of cars stuck in traffic on the A4042, M4 & A470, over cross hatched lines etc.

Thanks for the replies. I have the original 2014 r9t and is road use only (unless taking avoiding action)
I very rarely go on motorways, usually wizzing around the yorkshire dales and lake district.
The Roadtecs are on my radar and interested in the road attack 4s, I had the RA3s and didn't really dislike then , i just found the steering a bit slow. I didn't know they had moved onto 4s so that's a possibility thanks Wessie.

A friend has the Dunlop Mutants on his MK1 S1000XR and has ridden it in all conditions, he has no complaints about them at all and they seem to be lasting well. He prefers them to the Road 5's the bike came with.

I'm another one who just doesn't gel with Michelins, I've had strange front tyre wear and punctures every time I've tried them, so on my 900XR I fitted Conti RA4's, much better feel from those and they lasted longer, I would have probably got 8K miles on that bike from the RA4 rear if I hadn't traded it in against the GS.
