Thoughts on the3 Scala G4

Got this from somebody ...

Myself and a friend have had them for 7 month's they are good for 1 kilometer. They are very clear up to about 80 mph over that you have to talk louder.
They have hardwire for ipods thats good, radios ok if your on radio 1 you have to keep retuning it on longer journeys.
Overall I give it 8 out of 10.

Thanks for the link.
Read that previously but that was all there was. Was hoping to boost the reviews a bit.

what do want to know ? radio crap the rest very good. Me and John use them.

I've been using a pair for a few months combined with a Zumo 550. Mostly it's good but the bluetooth can be a bit flakey at times and lose connection at awkward moments. At it best doing one thing at a time - GPS or intercom. Riding solo the Zumo is clear on nav & music. It doesn't like my phone (Nokia) but that's the Zumo's fault & it works fine with other phones. I've found it gets confused sometimes on bike to bike and tends to bump the receiver's GPS out which can be annoying. Super convenient not having any wires & useful when SWMBO goes to pay for petrol - don't forget the Snickers dear! On balance not as consistent as my old Autocom but much more convenient.

Thats a fair assesment! London bikers love them, convenient yes but unpluging one wire is not so hard! BTW Autocom will be bring out a blue tooth headset in the near future! really i hear you say! lol

I've had a pair of Scala G4 units for a few months, here's my thoughts.

Right from new one of the pair would not hold charge, DK Motorcycles Newcastle Under Lyme they told me I had to send it back to Cardo Systems in the USA. In fairness I was told when I bought them that any technical isues had to go back to the USA. My argument was that these were new and should be replaced because the issue wasn't a technical fault but a new product fault.

I called the USA, they said I had to pay for postage. I decided to get a refund, I had to threaten DK to get my money back.

Bought another pair that were fine from a bike shop in Cradley Heath, (don't remember name), got a better price than DK, so chuffed.

On to performance, using rider to rider or rider to pilion setting they are very good particularly with full face helmets. I get some activation problems with an open face helmet on my Harley, then again it's very loud.

The IP3 player is excellent although the music could do with better base. The phone is excellent, I haven't mastered voice activation yet but that's probably me rather than the equipment.

The radio reception is by and large poor and extending the antena doesn't help.

The biggest downside is using the controls.

Firstly, remembering what buttons to press, for how long, in what sequence etc is a challenge. Maybe as an older person it's just me. I'm getting more used to it now but I becasue I only use the Scala on avaerage once a month for communicating person to person I have to "re-learn" most of the controls over again. More than once I've had to reset the unit back to factory settings and then pair with the other devices.

Secondly, it's not easy to find the buttons when your wearing heavy duty gloves and on the move.

I use it most often with my iphone for music and calls, I find it great. The unit is also good with my GPS when paired by bluetooth or through the MP3 hard wire.

The battery life is very good but I'm usually prepared and often charge it when I'm riding through an Optimate connector.

I haven't checked the claimed range of a mile yet nor have I used it with more than two of us.

The worst part is the pillion keeping interupting the music for a chat.

It's expensive, it's not easy to remember the controls but on the whole worthwhile. I've heard some bike shops have a demonsrator but I couldn't find one.

If you have any more questions let me know.

Mind of its own

Used three of them on a recent trip to Italy. Had the wife as pillion and the mate was on his bike. Pairing drops without any real reason, sometimes at very short range. Sometimes I could hear the wife only, sometimes I could hear the mate only, sometimes we could all speak to eachother and sometimes I got no voice prompt from the Zumo. Sometimes it worked perfectly and I could everything and everyone. Got to the point where I would have gained great satisfaction from smashing it to bits with a ****ing big hammer.

...so it's for sale then?...:augie

I am considering getting some form of intercom and was looking at the Q2 multiset. Was rather hoping that the general ownership experience was more encouraging though!

Have a look at Autocom or Starcom they have been around for a while! Autocom have a website have a look at the Logic and Super Pro both good units great sound and saves money buying another system when you get *issed off with your bluetooth lol  Lots of add on with autocom can connect GPS, Iphone, use custom moulded earplugs, can soon connect BMW Nav 4 via new bluetooth unit, connects to Ipod and you have a noise sensor in the helmet that adjust sound levels auto for you!

Pillion 'if you have one' get their own music and or phone seperate to you or rider can have two phone inputs like we use on long trip so as to add a Sat Phone and normal GSM phone. Thease are option on the Super Pro and both units allow for bike to bike to be added at a later stage you can use some cheap kenwood UBZ or a better option is the Intaride PMR radio that has the ability to increase watts out put for better distance.

Good Luck!

Scala G4 not for me

I just tried two of these and have returned them both. A bit disappointed but it looks like a hard wired system for me.
