Tire problem...

A while back I was in the middle of nowwhere, a good 300km from the nearest tyer designed for a 1200 GS when I got a 2 inch gash in my rear tyre. After a lot of phoning around I found a Michlin Macadum the correct size and had it sent by van to where I was. The michlin was serving me well, and was a very good road tyer for the GS.

With a good 3-4mm of center tread left, it today decided to let go of a chunk of tyre tread a good 3 x 2 inches in size...I was on a good surface, so can only assume the tyre must have been old when I first fitted it. I was 40km from my destination so carried on slowly without a problem, just a slight vibration at certain speads.

On further inspection I found a couple of other suspect patches, but no further deteriation. I'm a long way from any city, and 300km from the nearest dealer with a tyer the correct size for my GS. I'm temped to drive slowly home, as attempts to have a tyer sent here have so far not worked (I'm a few hundred KM north west of Kuala Lumpur, the nearest city with Battlewings.

Anybody had to do serious miles on fecked tyers? any thoughts?

The tyre? It's up to you. St Eptoe rode one for miles and miles that had about three plugs in the same hole, married to cans of runflat, or whaterver it is called, following a puncture from the bolt from hell. Nobody bar you has seen your tyre, chunks flying off it or not.

If tyres are not available in your jungle clearing, why not ask someone to DHL some to you? Do I recall that your son lives in the UK? Maybe he could do it?

Bods go around the world, somehow they buy tyres in the most far off locations, so it must be possible?

Failing that, it's the bus into KL for you.
 
Similar to above - the rear of one of our party after recent Pyrenean jaunt ! Got him 200miles home - ridden carefully.

I hadn't really noticed - but you are right.
He is relatively new to biking and admits to being more confident around left handers - so that is the likely cause.

i can under stand the problem in Kuala Lumpur, but feck me, don't they have tyre shops in mainland europe? :rolleyes:

:D Yeah, that's what I was thinking! Get caught by plod riding that in europe and yer bike will be prohibited from going another inch untill its sorted. All for a half hour stop off at a tyre shop ....

Yes I did notice that Jonno, I've gone native..... tayer is also used here in Malaysia....I do get confused, and as an engineer never could spell anyway....

I am of cours looking at possibilities of getting a tyer sent to my location, and correct wapping my son could help but that is a very expensive route.

This post was more towards experience at coaxing home the damaged tyer as a worst case scenario.

I have myself riden on some pretty screwed tyers on small bikes while in Indonesia, but a laoden GS is another matter.

At the moment I'm still trying to get a tyer sent or finding one close enough to get to, But come Friday I may have to ride her come what may...

thanks for the imputs so far, I'll try to get a picture of the damage later today.
 
Here is a picture of the effected tyre. You can see a patch of tread has co,me clean off. Its as if the tyre was a remold, possible, but it came with all the right mchelin wrapping and frankly the market is just to small here to justify molds.....

This tire should not be ridden a single meter anymore. I think you know it anyway. This tire should not have been mounted on your motorcycle in the first place.

I suggest that you bite into the sour apple now and make a probably expensive order for a tire that suits your GS. From your Asian culture you probably will dislike hearing this kind of "open" words, but I think you better not ride a motorcycle like the GS, if you want to repair it with Scotch tape and superglue. I am sure you know what I mean.

Thanks for the info Peter, I'm familiar with both places, and now have it sorted. The Tourance is difficult to get in Malaysia, Sonny motor havent had any for a long time. I have just got myself a Bridgstome Battlewing, these are also good for the GS.

The tire on the bike is a Michelin Macadum, and are standard items on big japanese street bike like the FJ1400, and even Goldwing, so although not suited for off road use (my GS has not been off road since that tire was fitted) it should have no trouble with the wieght of a GS. So I think I simply have a dud, but it is 18 months old....

Anyway I have a new tire that should be with me by tomorrow.

I wouldnt ride on that,

looks like you hit something nasty to take a chunk like that out,that combined with a dodgy tyre and maybe the heat out there?

Not quite sure what your question is Peter? but if its a question about the age of the Macadam then you can simply google it, the M50 is a modern "sports tourer" sold today, but I'd add that that is an american term to describe it, I'd call them touring tires, and they are a common replacement even on Harleys.
