hi all

i would like to now the best way to get the down pipes out of the engine block
as i have got the castle nuts off but they are seized in.
would it be best to heat them up?

plus how much would i be able to sell a running /7 engine with about 60.000miles on it for .

i get the pipes out with judicious application of dead blow mallet to the inside of the bends.

Sean,

First, try to remove the compression rings from around the pipes. If they are really jammed into the head don't go damaging the head, just leave them where they are, they should come out with the pipe eventually.

Do you have a balance pipe linking the headers ??

If so, it should be possible to move the connector sleeve far enough to one side to allow the headers to separate - then just heave on each one in turn to rotate the pipe in the head.

If you don't have balance pipes, just try rotating each header in turn.

Once it starts moving it should come out with a bit of release oil. If not, knock it out carefully from the back, with a piece of wood between the pipe and the hammer. Don't go flattening the pipes if you intend to use them again :blast

If all this fails you could try some heat, but as it is designed to run very hot I doubt if that will make a huge difference, particularly if its all glued together with exhaust assembly paste. However differential expansion may help a bit so give it a go.

Basically, its just a matter of working at it until it comes loose.

I have no idea what the going rate for engines is - I'll let the E-Bay watchers comment on that question.

Regards.

Bob.

i have tryed to get the down pipes off and they are not moving. i have got the 2 thin metal rings out the way and hitting the end of the down pipe with a big hammer and a block of wood and its not moving. it has as balance pipe fitted and there is no way to get it off and the hole thing is soild nothing is moving ever way.

any ideas ?
and would i be right in thinking that the down pipes need to be taken of to get the engine out ?

A good spray of WD40 and let it soak a bit? They are pretty tight but should come out if you hammering it :eek

Stupid question but did you undo the headers where they go into the silencers properly :nenau

You will have a good old time trying to take the motor out with the headers on :augie

What's it worth --> Ebay shows anything from £100-£500

Why are you taking it out?

the wiring loom on the bike is dead so going to sell the bike in bits

i have taken off the silencers from the bike and have undone the brackets by the front foot pegs. the balance / cross over pipe is still fixed on.

DON't hit the end of the pipes[ it just makes them angry  ]Use a wood block and batter f uck out of them on the bend near the head..
Also a good soaking in weasel piss..
Around a double measure of scotch size
50%parrafin [ or diesel], 50%vinegar add a teaspoon of oil, brushed in will free it over night:thumb2

regarding engine>>
100/7 with heavy or light flywheel????
What bike was it in ???
I ask because some are 70 bhp standard :rob

its a 1977 r100/7 and i think its the standard engine. going to try the mix just now

Ps. . where can I get weasel piss ?
I havent got a use for it but id just love to be able to say ive got some !!!!!!

Thats what I use :rob:rob

We use some stuff at work called "monkey s***k", I wonder if its similar ?

Try and warm the heads up before applying the penetrating oil it lets it soak into the joint space better try to keep the heat off the pipes
leave it a day then soak again they should spin more easy than straight pull out

with about 20 mins hitting a bit of wood with a big hammer and the right one is free. the left one has moved about 1cm.

how many cm do they go in to the cylinder head? as they cant be much more before its free.
i have coverd it in weasel piss and will try the big hammer tomorw
dont wont to heat it up as the parafin will go on fire.

You type that, like it's a bad thing
After a couple of days soaking, if it's still stuck, blow lamp on the joint, two or three wallops with wood = jobs a carrot :thumb2

Look at how much the one, now out, was in ,, usually very similar :rob
:bounce1

i think there is a wee bit on the left one to go .then they will pope out.
the down pipes have not been out in over 10years so it bound to be stuck.
as the right one is loose but not out as the cross over pipe is still fitted so they need to come out in one lump
