Tyre plugging

Oh not not another tyre thread you say to yourself !!

Just after some advice, before the shops try and rip me off, from the wealth of knowledge and experience on here...

Just before getting to work this morning I head a pop from the back of the bike. By the time I'd pulled up in the car park the TPS lights were flashing and telling me what I'd feared.

This little buggers in tha back tyre, just off centre.

I know there isn't a problem putting a plug repair in normally, but as this is down in the bottom of the tread will be there any problems ???

It should be fine. There are guide lines that they use - they'll only plug within a central 3/4 area or something like that, and they'll only plug up to a cetain size hole, but the fact that its within your tread shouldn't mater. You'll just end up with an extra wear bar!

That looks more like a screw trying to escape from inside your tyre

Should be fine with a plug BTW

The perfect puncture.

Remove the screw, apply lots of rubber solution the removed screw and then screw it back in the hole.

I've used a self tapper as a tyre plug a few times in the past without any problems whatsoever

Maybe I could put a few more in and use it in the ice over winter

I think I'll go for the option of an extra wear marker instead..

Picked my brand new 09GSA and had two of them punctures in my tyre after 60 miles had them plugged and did another 9k on that tyre with no probs and with TPC it will tell you if anything goes wrong repair, ride and dont worry about it.

Biek shops aren't interested in repairing it, only selling me a new tyre. can't blame them to be honest...

Tried a repair kit, and managed to tear all the rubber bits while pushing them through the hole.

So now waiting for BMW to sort out a recovery truck

I'd be buggered if I went on one of them trips into the desert !!

I know you are a bit far away Chas, but if you get the wheel off and take it to Westgate Tyres in Morecambe they'll always try to plug the tyre if possible. They put a plug in my rear tyre a couple of weeks ago after I picked up a screw 2 inches from the centre of the tyre, the tyre only had 300 miles on it and I didn't really want to change it.

Why did I bother getting the bike out this morning !!

First days ROSPA training tomorrow aswell... Bugr.. Don't think they'll be impressed if I turned up with a screw hanging out the tyre and me claiming it'll be alreet !!

You need to get yourself a 'Stop n Go Pocket Tyre Plugger'. It uses small mushroom shapped plugs that are a piece of piss to use. You can get it for about £20 or so and just chuck it under your seat. It's saved my ass on 3occasions in the last 3 years.

Its only been formed a couple of months. Thought we'd give this one a go. They've put one group of people through so far, and we're the second.

Looks like I'm getting up at the crack of sparrows in the morning now to go nick my Dads bike from Yorkshire... Going to be interesting having my first assessment on a Street Triple

Simple to use ( I've used them for about 15 years and had up to 4 plugs in a tyre with no problems ).

Yer hole aint big enough! Thats what the gnarly rimming tool is for. It can take three or four minutes of rasping and pumping, esp if the original puncture is something small like a pannel pin / wire nail.

Tried the hamfisted way when I got home. 5mm drill... Got a plug in... Pumped up the tyre... Started leaking !!

Same dilemma with a slight difference for me... been offered a back tyre for the Tiger... used for a week and 100 miles only.. tiniest nail right in the centre of the tread...

Anyway... offered the tyre for £15 fitted to a loose wheel with a proper plug fixed from the inside....

Should be a bargain of a tyre. I've had 2 bloody punctures in my current rear tyre. I plugged the first one with a mushroom patch, it's holding up well after a good few thousand miles. No sign of any problems whatsoever. The second one, I just bunged in a bottle of slime and it's still OK.

The tyre is nearly finished now, I hope I have better luck with the next one.

Never had a puncture before, then 2 come along at once!
