Up in Smoke - engine sounds like a box of spanners!

Let us know how you get on, I'm fairly new to the GS scene and am dismayed at the gloom and doom on this site.

Good tips though,

Enjoy that beer.

With apologies for hijacking the thread - You'll get used to it, in part its due to the 1200 owners whose bikes have not broken not posting every week "it still works", also various 1150 owners like to drop in to gleefully point out how Sh1te the 12 is compared with the 1150. Sadly they do have a point, but if your final drive doesn't go, fuel pump relay keeps on working and your EWS key sensor ring doesn't give up the ghost they are fantastic bikes to ride, I prefer it to my previous 1150 :)

My 08 1200GSA is still on song:beerjug:

Let's not start all that again !!!

I just want to know if his engine is actually full of old spanners - and what is being done about it.

Deal is I get the bike to the dealer (spoke to Alan) and they will look at it and chase BMW for a goodwill repair. Says they are usually successful when they ask and that BMW generally cover 90-100% of the bill. No guarantee but sounds reasonably hopeful.

I'm definitely less stressed than I was last night.

Thanks for all the help. I'll keep you posted on where it goes ...

and lots of pictures...:D

I travel to Portadown everyeight weeks, I went to the BMW dealer North of Belfast, last time I was there. I found them very helpful and chatty. Seem an ok bunch. Unlike some of the over the top 'corporate' dealers in the uk.
Sounds like you may get a good will fix, after all 7k is no miles and if it was'nt bad work or a valve left loose , then it's gonna be dodgy material.
Ride safe, good luck
Gary

That's a good start mate. I'm pleased for you and my stress levels which I have been suffering on your behalf are also subsiding. Hate to see anyone in the shite like this. Good luck and keep us posted :aidan

Hope BMW can sort it for you, they should as Tim has said in other threads they,BMW, really do have a problem that needs to be addressed.
I know there has been alot of debate on here regarding the extended warranty I've had it since the end of the first two years,I've had my money worth up to press and with a 2006 bike I'm gonna keep the warranty for a while yet.

Thanks Jaythro, got sorted out by a man in a van. Seems Hurst BMW are backed up with bikes at the moment but have promised some answers within a couple of days. Let's see what comes up. At least the dealer sounds like they want to help and have promised to push BMW on it. All I can do at the moment is be patient and stay positive.

Just request a final figure before they get too far in If it hasn;t penetrated the piston you could be lucky and get away with a barrel piston and head

The BIke I did had dropped the valve on ME at about 2500 rpm whilst moving away from a junction half a mile from my place to say I was "NOT" impressed would be mild

Since that bike was a late 2004 with 11600 miles it was suggested that there would be no goodwill

Since the rebuild I now have a fuel enrichment doofer fitted There's a couple to choose from a recyclizer or an Accelerator module

Basically I reckon that they run so lean the exhausts are red hot especially if the clearances are tight, The closed time is less and therefore less heat is disapated from the head and there is sooo little metal at the joining point Heat + stress stretch = PING + BANG.... Blah blah blah PLus rumours that valves were "outsourced" to improve production rates

Anyway that's what I personally think

Fingers crossed for you and I'm sure Alan will do his best to get a satisfactory result. I know there's quite a few on here who wouldn't go through Hurst Motorrads door, but I guess we all have our own opinions due to circumstances. Personally, I was always happy with the level of service I received and believe they always try their hardest. But they too are at the mercy of whoever is above them which in many cases makes them out to be the bad guys.

You aren't the only one with that belief Jay. I was lucky that my 2004 bike never sufered the same fate in 45,000 miles but I now run an enrichment device on my 2008 bike as a precaution.

Glad to hear that Charles Hurst Motorrad are doing their bit for customer support, fingers crossed that the bike is fixed and the wallet isn't hit too deeply, it's only nuts and bolts and a few machined parts after all.
