HI.

Can you please help me with something. If you have BMW metal boxes, can you open them and see if you have a pointed based screws sticking up inside the box.

I think the point in the screw is mean to help guide the screw, however i have one in my topbox, that has just ruined a helmet.

I placed a helmet in the topbox came 8 miles home, only to discover the nice sharp pointed screw has acted like a engraving tool, and eaten into my wifes helmet.

offending screw...

yes.

its the screw for the air vent.

Hi Cookie,

So is it supposed to have a sharp point on it ?

If this is my fault for not seeing it, so be it. But i cant understand why BMW would use a pointed screw there.

Either way its a warning to others. the points bloody sharp to.

Mine had identical screw and it scratched the back of my helmet too.:blast

Filed it flat with a hand file and its fine now. I understand some owners line the boxes but I haven't bothered. :thumb

Air vent?

I wondered what those black things on back face of each pannier and the top box were. I've not got them and on occassions have had a small amount of difficulty opening a pannier due to air pressure differences. I guess that's what that solves?

You guess right.

You can make your own very easily.

Take a hand drill with a small diameter bit.

Put the bike on its side stand and find the lowest corner of the box / pannier. Drill your hole.

The reason for drilling at the lowest point is nothing to do with a air pressure. It is the point that water collects when the panniers (inevitably) leak. You have now killed two birds with one stone. No air pressure problems and now no swimming pool accumulating either.
