Via Points or Way Points

I've put together routes for a 9 day trip in May, but I've just realised that I've created them using via points rather than way points.

I've looked through some old threads but I'm not sure if this is likely to cause a problem not. Any thoughts?

What happens if I slightly miss a via point, will it keep trying to take me back there or will it move to the next one?

Should I go through the routes again and delete some via points and convert them to way points, or just add in way points for the specific locations I want to visit.

You seem to have it figured out...

I use via points for 'gluing' the route to certain roads... and waypoints for my 'destinations'...

So lunch along the route... = waypoint

Bit of road that you want to make sure you ride over... = via point...

If you miss either, and get back on your route outbound... the GPS will direct you to the next turn going away from it anyways...

Not sure (likely GPS specific) what happens if you miss either type of point and are not back on your route... I think the GPS will mostly offer to recalc (if you have ask turned on)..

I know the streetpilots announce (very annoyingly) the arrival at each via point, just like they are waypoints... and I believe that Quests don't...

Iain - in addition to other responses keep this in mind!

If you use the unit (2610 SP111 etc) to create the route, and you use towns or cities as Via's or Way Points, the points will invariably be in the centre of the town or city. In my case that meant when I simply wanted to skirt a town - in order to stay on a particular road - I'd end-up in the centre of some town - hunting for a way out again!

If what you really want is say... London Via the road that goes past Newcastle, you need to make the Via actually on the road - not the city!

The wrinkle with this is that if you make a way point on a road, the way point name is usually something you wont recall (in terms of location)... so the above Via might be called 'A1' - and since the A1 is pretty long you'll want to rename that way point something a little more memorable. When I've had to do this in the past I've use 'ByPass xxx' (xxx is the town name).

Cant tell you how many unexpected towns and villages in France and Spain I visited with my SP111 some lovely experiences though - slow going.

The "recalculate" function calculates to the next waypoint. So if you want to maintain your route reasonably accurately then you'll need to convert the vias to waypoints. Personally, I have the recalc turned OFF.
