WAW Maps

That's what I done in France this year, booked the first night and used the app to book the rest on the fly.

...........Has anyone any suggestions on places to go see south between Killarney and Cork thats worth popping further down for?

Beara peninsula is the best of a really good bunch of stuff - if you do everything it will take more than a week

Agreed !....it's well worth riding the Beara peninsula and stop for refreshments at Teddy O'Sullivans bar by the pier at Lauragh.

Jochen, Liam & co can guarantee that it will be warm and dry in Cavanacarragh Hall......
'Guarantee' might be too strong a word for it Eddie ;)
Unless you mean inside the hall :D

Had a great time on my last visit (IIRC 2012), they even rolled out some local Irish dancers on the Sat night who were brilliant entertainment :aidan
Good aren't they ? They're arranged by steadyeddie :thumb

Great info folks thank you, will add Teddy O'Sullivans to the list of must tastes:thumb

Thinking so far is travel down to Killarney on a Wednesday and book two nights in Killarney with the following day to be spent doing the ring and Beara peninsular.

Depending how we get on that day and if we want to explore more of the area like a swing down to Kinsale we will stay another night or else start the WAW north and stay somewhere along that route and just book somewhere as we see fit and depending on progress..

don't forget the healy pass when you do the beara peninsula.

Thanks for the heads up on the pass:thumb

Played around with the planning a bit more today in between looking after my 5 month old son who put a stop to the trip last year by coming 7 weeks early and by the looks of it he was just right because the to do list just keeps getting bigger and we would have missed a fair few things :blast

It looks like its going to be a day down to Kinsale and stopping there for the night and then that will be our start point with aiming for two nights in Killarney, one for the next day to get there and the following day of doing the Ring. Plan after that is go north but we wont book hotels in advanced and just book as we go..

I played a bit on google maps for ideas and times and came up with something like this:

Day 1 https://goo.gl/maps/ShUr58MjPK72
Day 2 https://goo.gl/maps/tsWFKgWA9H22
Day 3 https://goo.gl/maps/Yx5HHYNNh6p
Day 4 https://goo.gl/maps/uR3ueM9g8Ku

Of course it can change on advice from yourselves and how we are getting on on those days, just food for thought really:beer:

I'd not stay 2 nights in Killarney.
Stretch day 1 by turning left after the Healy pass & stay in Allihes.
Day 2 Kenmare Ballaghabema Ballachoshin Sneem Loch Brin Black Valley Killarney.
Day 3 Head West from Dingle to catch Slea Head.
Take in the North Mayo coast - you need extra days.

Trust me - I'm not a doctor.:rob

It's warm and dry all year here. :aidan

LOL! Did it last year. My mate was not impressed by how wet we got. One day it rained from the minute we got up to the minute we went to bed. Another day was quite dry apart from two thunderstorms of biblical proportions.

His quote when we got back on the ferry was " Loved the poeple , loved the scenery , hated the weather. I won't be coming back ! "

:D

I like the sound of staying in Allihes and including Slea Head :beerjug:

I know I should be taking in more days but what we don't do this year we will do next year as we are hoping to get another trip to the west coast of Scotland later in the summer to do the Islands after doing the NC500 last year..

I think it will be a case of heading down on the Wednesday and then returning home on the Sunday but if we get it lucky and its going to be great weather on the forecast maybe head on the Monday/Tuesday:clap

kingoffat - Not sure if you ever got the map file you were looking for. If not, PM me and I can email a .gpx file to you.

As much as I like Allihies ..
I think two nights in one location is the plan I'd choose:
-a day without packing and luggage is always welcome.
- staying at the "base" of the peninsula instead of the tip gives route options if weather or schedules change.
- a choice of approach routes should allow you to minimise retracing of routes

Kerry:
It is possible to connect Gap of Dunloe-Black Valley to N79 (Molls Gap road)
Visit GofD and BV very early or very late in the day to avoid horses-drawn carts and walkers.
Inland Ballachasheen and Beallachabeama are good choices; often overlooked in favour of the coastal Ring route.

You have Kenmare-Sneem-Molls Gap included on two days. I'd suggest adding another loop on Beara Pennisula or Sheeps Head (Durrus-Ahakista-Kilcrohane ) instead.

If you need to save some time: Go directly from Tralee to Tarbert ferry.

Co Clare:
You MUST include Ballyvaughan - Black Head - Fanore R477. IF .. the weather is clear.

Cork:
Kinsale is lovely , well worth a visit.
But .. Kinsale to Skibb is the MILD Atlantic Way
Some lovely scenic detours but not as dramatic as the west. I say; be selective, don't do them all. Press on west.

Don't forget "drink, feck, arse" if going through clare:

Great input! some good points there, checked out the R477 on street view and yea its a must do:thumb

Talking with my dad tonight and it looks like it could still be the 2nd day as is and staying in Allihies for the night but now going for 2 nights in Killarney and giving ourselves 2 full days to do the ring and the other two peninsulas with just a relaxed go easy approach to the area:beerjug:

Your route looks pretty good Jonny. When heading from Galway to Sligo head out to Clifden then on to Leenaun and take the R335 towards Louisburg. This road will take you up along the Doo Lough and is a cracking ride for both the road itself and the views along the way. From Louisburg it's not far to Westport and you're back on track again.

Fantastic spin.......done it towards the end of last summer.
