I'm not sure ... let me move your post over to another section of the forum for 1200GS queries. :thumb2

Its a wallet (get you home) key, they used to be metal but bmw penny pinching turned em to plastic :augie

The plastic key is needed to re-tune/replace the ring antenna if it breaks (the immobilizer). You would be advised to take it with you on a long-distance journey.

Hope that helps Russell

Paddy

PS: This information is from my knowledge of F800, which I'd hope was true for the R1200 also..but I'm willing & prepared to be wrong/corrected on this matter.

I keep mine in my wallet when I'm travelling just in case I lose the metal one........

Note to self: Do not lose wallet. :thumb

Me? I gaffer taped it up inside the beak area. Note to self: Do not lose motorbike.

The plastic key can be hidden away 'somewhere safe' on the bike using silicon sealant in case you lose your keys.

...just don't hide it under the seat.....ahem !:augie

I'm working on the basis that I don't lose my bike key and my wallet at the same time.

Frankly if I did that I deserve everything I get :D

....and I hope your insurance company don't read this.

"So your bike has been stolen, sir - can we now have all of the keys and the V5?"
"No - actually, one of the keys was taped to the bike"
"Oh, I see. So you provided the means of theft of the machine? Sorry about your claim, sir. Goodbye"

So the ignition will still work even with the plastic key?

I thought the standard key has a transponder in it for the immobiliser, if EWS doesn't like the transponder then it doesn't start the ignition. Does the plastic key therefore also have one? Otherwise I don't understand how the plastic key works?

Don't panic!

Yes, the plasic key has a transponder in it.

If it didn't it would be a bit of key shaped plastic and about as much use as tits on a bull.

More fool you then, for engaging them in such a conversation in the first place. :D

What, during the lifetime of a vehicle - possibly through several hands - are the 'all the keys'? Was it the one, or two or maybe three or four it came with? Supposing it came with three and you simply lost one in the key drawer when you moved house, or lobbed one out with the rubbish?

There is no obligation to declare how many keys you have when taking out a policy, so they can have no way of knowing how many you possess at any one moment of the day or night. Similarly there is no obligation on you not to lose or temporarily mislay a key at any time, nor any obligaion to inform an insurer if you decide to get an additional key cut. I have four, I think, or is it three.... I forget..... Oh, and there is the one I ran over, but it still works, simply the rubber key loop ripped off... or did I throw that away, it's so difficult keeping track.

Of course, should your vehicle simply vanish and you cannot produce any key at all.... Then you may have some explaining to do... As, quite possibly, you handed the key and the vehicle to a thief and / or simply left the key in the ignition when you wandered off shopping....

i keep a spare on a tag chain round my neck on big trips,
cant lose it then, unless im beheaded

and dont put it in the pannier boxes either

Or in your wallet, which is locked securely in your topbox. :blast.

Main key had made a bid for freedom by tunneling through my trouser pocket liner. Finally found it having a party with 48p near my trouser cuff having searched the mean streets of Pachendale for an hour.

Back to buddy system now.:thumb2
