Whats the tyre Brand of choice?

Conti Force on an ordinary GT roadster. Also Maxxis SuperMax
Trail style Conti TKC-70
Sports / grip - Conti Road Attack but don't expect too many miles.

my opinion for what its worth... I have always put tourances on my GS until last year when I put conti trail attack 2s on... fantastic! great grip... great in the wet and I have just replaced them with the same after 13500!! (and I don't hang around neither)

Has you have probable guessed from the title of the thread i’m looking for a new set of tyres for my R1200gs 2011. After a lot of research on this web site & others i can not find a definite answer, the more i research the more confused i become. At the moment the bike is running Metzler Tourance. I’m after a 100% road tyre because i will never be riding on any other surface than tarmac. I ride in a progressive manner in wet & dry conditions and try to avoid has many motorways & duel carriageways has possible.
I have narrowed my choice to 3 brands;

Michelin Pilot Road 4 Trail (Tyre dealer tells me that they are the best wet weather tyre on the market, his opinion)
Dunlop RoadSmart II
Continental RoadAttack 2 EVO

What do you guys think i should go for, What your tyre of choice?

Cheers
Phil

PR4 Trails until someone invents something even better, sufficient grip to ride without chicken strips.

Currently in Millau and loving the pair I had fitted prior to leaving.

.... once again, the replies to this thread show that everyone has their favourite.... some only because they've been told by someone else that it's their favourite tyre.... So there is no definitive answer and no need at all to be confused.

Buy whatever you think will make you happy and you too will be able to join in the fun next time around.

Agreed - used to have PR3's but the 4's are even better. Have just spent the weekend around the Brecons and Snowdonia and they were very confidence inspiring wet or dry. Used them all the way to the edge to take the logo off the tyre which I've never been able to do on others.

The PR4 Trails and TKC-70 are similar prices on Tyreleader. They also have the latter in V rating which is nice.

I've always been a Tourance person. Probably had a dozen pairs over the years.
Always change them as a pair and usually at 4500 miles as they were just starting to form a lip in the rear.

Tourance EXP were terrible, pointy profile on the front which made the bike drop into corners and wear rate was 1000 miles less than regular Tourance.
Tried the Tourance Next and was really happy. Took 5500 miles out of the last set which still had another 500 miles in them by my usual standard, so better life than regular Tourance.

But changed them on Friday as I was heading off on the family holiday next day and have an upcoming Euro trip a week after I return.

My supplier showed me a new tyre on the market, Bridgestone Battleaxe Adventure A40.
Treat pattern was good, with very dep cuts, I got a good price and have gone with them along with Hutchy of the forum who was with me and doing the same trip.

Only a handful of miles before I headed off, but first impressions are they will be as good as the a Tourance next.

I tried searching for reviews, but they are just on the market and only reviews I could find were from journalists after the official launch.

Just another option!

Vote here for Bridgestone T30

I've use mine a fair bit on back lanes where the road centreline has pea gravel over tarmac.
The TKC-70 handles it all with no dramas. The previous road type rear with trail type front were great on clean tarmac but really nasty on gravel.
I've not done any real off-roading but experience so far suggests they will be good.

Well timed thread for me.
I'm about to change the EXP's that my 2012 TC came from the factory with. I bought the bike with 4k on it and a pretty well squared off rear, now with 5.5k on it including a jaunt round Scotland (a lot of motorway getting to and from), the rear is shot.

I had intended to just put a pair of standard Tourances on it (as I have on all my GS'es) but I keep hearing bad things about the new Chinese ones so it might be time for a change. All my riding is road based (perhaps the odd gravely track when I have to!) with a fair bit of it loaded and / or two up.

Seems from this thread that PR4 Trails have a good name - I assume they're as good two up and loaded? What sort of life are people getting from them?

Cheers (and sorry for the hijack!)

They are good Matt, but I think it's fair to say so are the Dunlop's & Conti's. The days of crap (mainstream) tyres are long gone. I've got PR4's on my GSA but too soon to say, mileage wise.

Have you had them off the tarmac yet ??

i dont think they are really an off road tyre, they share a similar casing to a trail attack,so they are of a slightly lighter construction to a tourance, and nowhere near as rugged as a k60,
having removed k60's to fit the tkc70 straightaway it was noticable how much faster the bike turns in, and changes direction, the downside seems to be that the bike is slightly less stable and can track a bit on tar seams and white lines.
the bike is happy up to @90mph much over that and it was weaving a bit ,BUT ,the bike was carrying the two of us with full panniers,so i dont think a tyre has been made that wouldnt weave a bit at that speed.
i will report back once i have had a chance to test the bike with no baggage:D:D
my seat of the pants guess is that these tyres will be very suited to enthusiastic touring:augie

I'll probably chance a set when my PR4's are worn down. It will either be the TKC70's or the new Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2.
