No, I don't think anyone has ever asked that before. :augie
I reckon Tarka should be able to put you right on that one.

Talk about jumping in with both feet! :blast

general consencus of opinion is 20/50, some people use ordinary mineral oil, (especially for the first few thousand miles), others myself included use semi synthetic or full synthetic.
You do not need to use motorcycle specific oil in the boxer engines as they have seperate engine and gear box oil, plus dry clutch.

20/50 engine oil is available at Harley dealers in mineral or synthetic form.
Rock oil also do a high spec good quality semi synthetic 20/50 which I can supply at reasonable cost to folks in the northwest.

Some of us find the search facility a little disappointing.

It can be good, The biggest problem is that, although the Font Of All Wisdom is searchable, you don't get the results from there because of the date they were last posted on.

So if i search for 'oil' , in all forums, i get these results. Theres no FOAW threads in there.

However there is a very good thread in there by Wapping, called, oddly enough 'oil'. Mind you a quick search of the font of all wisdom doesn't even show Wappings thread - heres the results :nenau

So unless you know it's there, your not going to get the benefit of it. Maybe someone can change the way the search runs so that relevant FOAW stuff displays at the front of all searches (if thats even possible):nenau This might help some of the other questions, I note that someone wanted to know where he could find the link for the fuel pump controller workaround. It's in the FOAW, a search for 'fuel pump controller' shows it, but on the fifth page. Thats a lot of reading to find what you want.

Simple choice - I buy the stuff with the BMW label on the bottle. Job done.

I know that people have debated over the various pros and cons of oils for ever but using what the manufacturer says seems to make life simple.

Hi and welcome to the site :thumb2

The handbook does tell you, just go for the grade that covers the temp range that you ride in. As already mentioned, most peeps find that a 20/50 works well.

Just out of interest I bunged in 5/50 fully synth at the last oil change and have found my bike starting to use oil again so will prob revert back to a 20/50 again at the next oil change

Sometimes just as easy to answer the question.

I followed a previous tip on here and got 12L castrol 20/50 delivered promptly from these folks. GSer 5% discount ref was EVDWZ32. :thumb

www.raceindustrial.com

Same here :thumb2 and they threw in a nice couple of freebies :D Mine seems to run quite nicely on the stuff so if the bike's happy, I'm happy!
