Hi
I have a R1200GS 2008 and I noticed a whirring sound coming from the left hand side of the engine which is most prominent around 2000rpm, this can be in neutral or whilst riding and will rise and fall with the revs. I thought it might have been the alternator bearings but I removed the belt and it made no difference to the noise. I reckon I have had this since buying the bike, around 2 years, it was just the other day when I was next to the same year of bike the engine sounded more solid without the whirring noise and it got me thinking what it could be. There is no problem in the performance or riding of the bike. Any ideas on where to look or if there is even an issue would be great.

Cheers

Not a small blow on the exhaust is it, though this would normally cause back firing through the exhaust.

If it's been like it the past two years and runs fine id ignore it.

the only thing I can think of that will change with revs and is 'side specific' is cam chain, but they normally rattle! suggest a search on here or google

Hi
This sounds like timing gears. Mine is the last of the 2007 models. The whirring on mine comes in around 3000 RPM and is only there for a few 100 revs each side. I have heard of this from other owners and comes in around 2 to 3000 revs.

Thanks for the replies. The alternator belt was disconnected, so that ruled out the alternator. The timing gear sounds like the cause of the noise, would this become an issue?
