Go for the new N standard - it's loads faster than G and that was loads faster than B!

I'd point you towards the Linksys Wireless-N Broadband Router

Yes go for the N standard as stated. Lynksys or Netgear. The latter is easier to set up in my opinin. The N standard won't make the internet speed any better than the G, unless you have a 300 Mb broadband connection as the normal 8 Mb broadband is no where near as fast as the g stadard anyway. It will make filesharing between PCs quicker though.

Many thx guys. I did as you suggested and bought that very one with wireless-N from PC World today.

Next question. I have a standalone PC and a laptop, do I need to add the software to both? if so, does it make a difference which one first?

Thx for your help, much appreciated.

Are you using wifi on the desktop or hard wiring it through an ethernet port? If the latter then you don't need any software on that PC as the operating system will negotiate with the router. Having one PC hardwired to the router will be an advantage should the wifi stop working, although plugging a laptop in is hardly a major inconvenience.

On wifi connected machines you will need to install drivers for the adapters in each machine. If these were factory fitted then they will already be equipped. The Linksys router wil come with a CD containing a utility to install on your machines. If you are using Windows XP then this utility is unnecessary as XP has all the software you need.

Lastly, enable encryption on your router to prevent neighbours using your bandwidth and accessing your files. Do this after you have got the system up & running and from a PC hardwired to the router.

Got it. Router installed and PC working fine connected by a cable. How do I go back to change the security?

Read the manual: or at least the "quick install" chart that came with the router

You'll need to start by typing in a number into the address bar of your web browser, usually 192.168.1.1 and then entering the default password into the web page that appears (sysadmin)

From there on, refer to the manual as I'm not sure if the new fangled router has the same user interface as my older 802.11b variant.

If you mess things up don't panic, there will be a hard reset button on the back of the unit that will return everything to factory defaults.

all sorted now! sitting watching Max Mad in preparation for tomorrows Salisbury run. Thx very much for your help.

Owe you a beer at the next event.
