I've only owned my '07 Xcountry for month and I'm beginning to regret it already. I love riding it (after sorting out the knackered steering head bearings) but it seems to be a magnet for scumbag London thieves. Two weeks ago I chased off two fellas on a scooter who were trying to break the steering lock and today I left work to find my instrument cluster missing:mad:
I had to ride home doing hand signals as the indicators wouldn't function.
Both incidents in broad daylight in central London. Not worth claiming insurance as my excess is £250 although I'm not sure of the price for a new cluster.
It looks like it just pulls out as there doesn't seem to be any damage. Anyone know if this is the case? If so its a bit worrying as it'll happen again when I fit a new one.
Unlikely my nicked one will show up on ebay. Strange item to steal unless you have a buyer I guess. Anyone know any breakers who might have one:confused:

They're listed at $460 just for the instruments (Part No 62 11 7 696 857) - can't find a UK price for them.

Bad luck - this is becoming a frequent occurrence... :(

That's a bugger ... thieving scumbag, I hope they rot in hell!!!

Only held on with three small circlips which would probably break away with a right good tug.

Bastards ....

It would be interesting to know just which just models have been manufactured with these, what appears to be , quick release clocks. Is it a BMW thing, or are there tales of these goings with other manufacturers bikes?

Nick,
I have a spare set of clocks. My wife's bike was stolen out the garage but my son and I disturbed them and gave chase and recovered the bike a little distance away with the clocks missing. An exciting evening. They had my GS too but found it too heavy to handle and dropped it in the road. We got both back relatively unharmed.

Anyway ... I bought a used set of clocks from the US but never used them as my neighbour turned up the originals in his garden. If you are interested let me know and I will check what they cost and see if we can do a deal. They were not cheap but a lot less than new ones and I have checked they work ok.

Thanks Steve. I am looking into the Trail Tech Vapor thing that Johnny Boxer suggested. The worry about fitting another OE cluster is that it will just happen again.

Check the 1200 section, there's been a few cases of clocks/instrument cluster disappearing. I think someone started manufacturing a locking device for them..

I think Mark Hooton does something for the new WC 1200 clocks, not sure about others but I am sure he would be able to help out. Dealt with him in the past, great bloke to deal with.

Is he on here? Do you have his contact details?

I pm'd Mark Hooton. He is prepared to make clock guards for the X bikes, however he would need a bike to enable him to make the guard.
Anyone like to volunteer their bike?
Peter

Good shout Peter....

It seems to be across the board. Mine were nicked two months ago (still waiting for replacement clocks from BM ), the insurance assessor was saying that a lot of triumph adventure bikes were having theirs nicked and I know of an 1190 that has had his nicked too ....

Hi All,
Been over in Ireland for a few days, I'll give Mark a call and arrange to see him hopefully sometime next week.

Ask him if he's doing anything for 1200 TC's please.
He can use my bike if he needs a template.
Thanx.

Nice one Bilks...

Finally got my new cluster. I have fitted it with large washers under the rubber mounts so it can't be pulled out although I guess the scumbags will just pull the whole lot off the bike next time.

When I plugged in the new cluster it seems to think I have a 17 inch wheel and it shows KPM not MPH. Any one know how to reset it or do I have to go to a dealer to get it set up?
