Hi all, have been offered an old but tidy XT350. Any coments, hints, tips etc. would be welcome. I know they were kick start only-are they a complete bastard to start when hot? I understand the 600 is!
Cheers, Martin.

Was the definitive trail bike until things like DR350's and XR400's came along. Nice easy powere delivery weight not too bad and a simple stong engine.
Go for it if its cheap

I've got an XT350 tucked away in the garage,
Good, solid and simple. They were around for years with few changes.
Hot starting not a problem.
As long as the motor runs clean, without spitting, you're OK.
The intake rubbers have a tendency to split and cause the spitting ,backfiring etc.

Mine's as tough as old boots. The only weak point I've found in ten years of ownership is the carb manifold rubbers which kept breaking off the metal base. Now fixed using the wonder adhesive MS polymer. I use the bike for trail riding only and I would say that of the 15000km on the clock less than 1000 of those have been on road. The bike is virtually standard aprt from Enduro comp 3/4 tyres, stronger handlebars and brush guards (and all unecessay bits removed). Servicing is an oil and filter change every 800 to 1000kms and new back brake shoes every 2000kms.

Had a one at work and the only problem apart from people falling off it were self destructing Yamaha non sealed wheel bearings.
If its a later one they're restricted on the inlet rubbers to something daft like 17 bhp.
As already said a pain to start when hot especially if they've been over on their side in mud !

Thanks, chaps-went to have a look today, bike looked scruffy, but owner was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He knew lots about them, and I reckon mechanically it was sound. I just think he wanted too much for it, £795-guess he'd throw in lots of spare filters and stuff, tho. What do you reckon?

You'll not get a reasonable ttr250,xr250 or dr350 for less than a grand. If you intend to use it in the winter and offroad cosmetics aren't that important and plastics etc are cheap enough
Check out priced in TBM

That would seem a bit pricy
Its a pretty old bike and for that money I'd be looking for something pretty tidy. That said if your convinced of the history its maybe worth spending a bit over the odds....
Ain't buying second hand bikes fun!
