I am probably being incredibly thick but I have, I think, read T F M (all 63 pages) but cannot see an answer to something.

On my old Nav III it was easy to delete routes from My Data. I simply selected the route(s) and pressed delete...gone!

On the Zumo 550, unless I am doing it wrong, the following seems to happen:

(a) I create a number of routes on my PC. No problem.

(b) I send them to the Zumo, no problem.

(c) Zumo files them in My Data, no problem.

(d) I hit Where To, then Routes, and import one or more routes from My Data, no problem.

(e) I use all the imported routes. No problem.

(f) I then want to delete the routes I have used, having no more use for them.

(g) I can easily delete them from the Routes list, no problem.

(h) I then go back to My Data and there they are still, ready for me to re-import. There seems to be no easy way of deleting them from My Data, without losing everything else, favourites, etc.

(i) The problem is, as I see it, My Data will hold 50 routes. I make a new route on my PC, say, in 12 months time, and forget that I made a similar route (or at least a similar or identical name). I will now have two routes - or maybe more - in My Data. I swan off on holiday, summon up My Data and promptly cannot remember which is the latest variant or, more likely, import the wrong one and then end up wondering why I’m not going where I am expecting.

Any ideas?

The Zumo should file them in "Routes", how are you seeing them in "My Data"?

Via the PC? If so they will be deleted from "My Data" the next time you load more routes

Ah, I thought you would be my salvation.

I am seeing them in My Data on the GPS device itself.

Hence my confusion.

However, I think I may be starting to answer my own question......

I used my Zumo for the first time last week for Le Mans.

I created perhaps eight routes on my PC, put them all in one file and sent them to my Zumo. No problem.

I hit MY DATA and there they all were.

Each route had a tickable little box against it.

I ticked each box and Imported them. This struck me as a bit odd but 'hey-ho' I thought.

The eight routes then appeared in Routes.

I used each of them, as normal.

I then, holding onto the Zumo, deleted them from Routes, after using them. I thought this would also delete them from My Data but no....

Hence my confusion.

On page 41 of the Owners' Manual (which is pretty vague about creating routes on a PC and importing them) it explains that User Data can hold routes. I guess it's a sensible function, so that you can keep several regularly used routes, a bit like Favourites?

I honestly wonder whether I have, somehow, imported them from Routes on the Garmin's drive, in a sense, importing them to myself....albeit I am convinced that they were not shown in Routes origiinaly.....but it was after a night on a ferry and a large meal, so I suspect owner error is creeping in!

If that is right I cannot see how to delete them from My Data, much beyond the 'kill all' function on page 46.

PS The more i think about it, the more I think I got it wrong. Only one way to find out....

Create a fresh route....see what happens.....'kill all' later.....only panic if it goes POP!

When you say My Data do you mean User Data and then Import Data?

Do these steps one at a time to see which solves the problem

1. go to the garmin/gpx directory (Zumo device memory) and change the suffix of temp.gpx to,say, .gpz

2. You may have 'shared' the routes to the SD card, so go to the SD memory and look for other .gpx files such as shareroutes.gpx and change the suffix of that as well.

3. change suffix of Zumo memory garmin/poi/poi.gpi to .gpj

4. change the suffix of SD card garmin/poi/poi.gpi to .gpj (favourites)

Right then.

Now at home with the Zumo in hand.

I made a quick route file (with two routes on it) on the PC and sent it to the Zumo. No problem.

I disconected the Zumo from the PC. No problem.

The Zumo then flashed up a message, something along the lines of New data found, would I like to manage it (something like that). If I clicked No. The device simply reverted to the start screen Where to? View Map etc.

If I touched Where to I was told, No routes available.

If I then went back to the start screen, then touched the spanner, then User data (forgive me I called it My data before) then touched Import data, then Import Routes, the two routes I had loaded from my PC were shown.

Each had a square against them and an option to Select All or, I guess, just one of the two.

If I checked both (or one) an Import button lit up.

If I touched it the device flicked onto a calculating mode, followed by a percentage of task completed and fianaly a message that Data was successfully imported.

If I then went back to where To? Then Routes, both routes were available for use.

I guess this is normal? The PC sending the routes to User data first (not to Routes) from where it has to be moved (by importing data) into Routes.

This is totally different from my old Nav III.

I can then Edit the route in Routes and Delete it. It is still alive in User Data though, meaning I can re-import it back into Routes.

To delete it from User Data I have to make sure it been deleted in Routes, then connect to the PC and send a fresh route file in. This seems to clear the deleted files off the User Data and, at least, stops me having to use the 'kill all' function.

Again, this is different to my old Nav III.

Is this all normal?

Am I doing something wrong?

Correction: All is a fekkin nightmare with that load of nonsense :blast - oh bring back the sanity of every other Garmin GPS I've owned :(

It's actually a good thing, although Wapping seems to have made a simple process sound like a degree course in astro physics.

The routes (and new waypoints) stay in "User data" as well as in the "Routes" section of the Find menu.

This means if you load a series of routes for a trip and manage to corrupt one while on the trip you still have the originals sat there waiting to be imported again.

When you load new routes and waypoints you automatically get a prompt asking if you want to import them when you switch the unit on, you don't need to go looking for them.

It's just a different way, don't be afraid of change :)

Sir makes a valid point, I forgot the Wapping factor ;)

Change is good, I'm too busy enjoying the phone interface elements, the safety camera and traffic alert at the moment to contend with all the other niceties of my Zumo, think the MP3 player is cack though :thumb
