► Tyre choices and emergency repairs

What they do tend to bring to the 'pointy things through a tyre' party is the resistnace to tearing, so you only have one hole to patch, and not a rip which has rendered the inner tube completely buggered.

They didn't have 2 fronts in stock so we only got one, and we've ordered the 2nd one from the UK shop, pneus tyres, if memory serves.

Let my knuckles bleed! :bounce1

Wish I could find some of these which would fit my GSA...

160 Rear Tyre

My tyres are nearly due to be replaced, i have a brand new Dunlop Sportsmax D220ST 160/70/17 sitting in my shed but the recomended fitment for the F800GS is 150/70/17. Does anyone who knows anything about tyres see any harm in this. I only do road riding and would need a decent grippy front tyre to go with it but Dunlop dont do a 90/90/21 Sportsmax. Any ideas?

Matching set might just be a good idea. Right sizes too.

Imagine the front and rear of your bike trying to carve out different arcs as you turn. Then add in different, non complimentary profiles.

We've got the Abba Tyre Changing kit which comes with a tyre lube.

Got the rears changed last night on both bikes. Looks quite "purposeful" :D Only screw-up was that I remember the "red dots" as the heavy point, not the light point. Several weights later... :blast :blast :blast :blast
Need to nip to a tyre company today and see if I can buy some weights off them.

Let's see... tyre thread... :thumb2 Let's dive in! :D Not that I "know anything about tyres".

First, the Sportmax is a Sport Touring tyre. So, the reason they don't make it in a 21" is because 21" wheels are exclusively used on off-road and adventure bikes.

However, I do think there's space in the swing arm for a 160 width tyre, as I checked yesterday evening when I fitted a 140/80-17" on my bike. However, the rim will be a bit too narrow, and I don't know what width these rims are, so best is to check with Dunlop to see what rim width is recommended for the 160 width tyre. If it's "within tolerances, then it'll technically fit.
Then you've got the thing that the SportMax is most likely designed as a tubeless tyre and the F800GS's spoked wheels require a tube. Fitting a tube in a tubeless tyre can be done, but it can have adverse effects - ask Dunlop for the official answer on this question.

Then about mixing tyres between front and rear; It can be done and it has been done successfully, but you really need to know what you're doing. Most likely you're going to end up with a lesser result than a better result.

In "My World"(tm), I'd sell the (higher value) SportsMax on eBay or somewhere, and then buy a set of (fairly cheap) Tourances or other adventure spec tyres. I remember getting a set of them fitted for £150 ride-in-ride-out. :thumb2

Hope that's of any use to you. :beerjug:

Cheers Guys that did help, it sounds much easier and wiser to sell the pair of Sportsmax tyres. Natural instinct is always to make use of anything you have sitting in your shed rather than spend money, but a new set of Trailwings sounds good to me.

Front and rears are on, on both bikes.

Looks awesome. :clap
Just about to go out to try them out and need to nip over to NOG to get some locks for my new top box. :beerjug: Then I might try to find some mud. :bounce1

Did you get them yet? How are they? I just ordered a pair from the same place - I hope they have the fronts in stock.

Hi all.

Can anyone remind me what the correct tyre pressures are for Tourance standard (not the EXP) tyres on a 650GS twin? Thanks.

Hi Malcolm,

I have those tyres front 110/80/19 (pressure = 34)

Rear 150/70/17 (pressure = 36)

I use that pressure as recomended to me by a friend :D

Metzeler webbsite show:

Dual Purpose (750cc & up )

Solo 2 Up Light 2 Up Heavy
Front 31-33 33-35 35-42
Rear 35-37 37-39 39-42

Hope it helps :beerjug:
