I looked at the GT myself and might even look at it again once it gets updated. KTM do not have a great name for reliability themselves though.

Only time will tell on the KTM reliability question, the one problem I had with my 1190 Adventure was a sticking fuel float which was replaced after the warranty had run out because it was a known fault. The only reason I changed to the GT was that they knocked over £5k off the list price and it seemed rude not to take advantage.

It does look like a very good all rounder that can do most things, except dirt. They are quite expensive here and the dealer support is not as good as BMW plus no roadside assistance. This was something I looked at while choosing bikes.

I have a 1290s

Look .... I am passionate about bikes! Fuck .... I have steered my whole life around bikes! From dispatch rider in the late 80’s to DSA instructor in the early 90’s to Bike cop for the last 13 years .... I have earned my living riding bikes!

So why do I post and rant?

Passion!!!

I feel angry with BM! I’ve had two GS’s .... and whilst they’re a great Bike (and they are..) I just had problems after problems after problems with (in particular) the WC GS. In the end I got rid of it.

I guess my passion and my venting in here ... is to you guys because you put up with it! I’ve never known a manufacturer like it for delivering a bike with so many problems ; EWS, fuel strip, engine finishing, frame rust, switch gear, gearbox on the early models, loose spokes...... it goes on and on and on .... and BM’s response to it all is ...’oh yeah .... sorry about that .... wanna coffee from our free and lovely nespresso machine ...?’

Why do people put up with it?! And because they do ... BM do nothing about it!!

I’m not here to slag off your bike in a my bikes better than yours pissing competition, it just does my head in that the GS is such a good bike, has so much potential .... but one in ten is a complete lemon !!!

Come on BMW !!!! Sort your shit out!!! I will not buy another one of your bikes until you do...!

I suspect, and has been said on here many times.... Numbers. Yes there are lemons, but the vast majority of the bikes are fine.

Ummmmm

EWS? Fuel strips? That wasn’t the odd one, that was nearly every bike! What did they do about it?
Nothing!!

I rode by CMC in Cannock yesterday and nipped in. They sell multiple brands of bikes as well as a huge section of used bikes which included a row of adventure bikes. Super tenere, explorer, GS etc all about 3-4 years old. Whilst this is no scientific observation I can tell you the one that looked the most worse for wear was the ‘14 GS. I don’t know what life it had but the front engine casing, cylinder head and swing arm had corrosion bubbling under the paintwork like a disease. And they wanted over 9k for it!

But the percentage of lemons is unreasonably high.

The real issue with bikes is that apart from styling there is a total lack of development. Any changes are forced by legislation nothing else.
Manufacturers re arrange the cylinders and drive systems but there are no genuinely new ideas.
For example what about electronic cams? It’s being done for cars to produce smaller and more powerful engines. Bikes? Nothing.
Rotax produce a clean and efficient 2 stroke for snow mobiles but it never gets into a bike. Why not?
Even down to tyres. Bike tyres wear out in no time. There’s no way any car driver would put up with such shit.
Basically, cars get genuine development. Bikes get restyled.

Ironically ... I’d have a bmw car in the blink of an eye! A lot of our job cars are BM’s (spend a lot of time in a 330 x drive) and it’s a fantastic car! I’d own one in a heart beat ....

Spending 5 minutes looking through this section of the forum shows a few repetitive problems that you’d expect the dealers to be reporting to the manufacturers. Whether or not they address those problems is the measure of how much they value their customers.

You can go on any bike specific forum and find problems but this is a rarity in that it attracts riders who own different bikes and they are always going to compare the issues with current BMWs against previous models and against their current bike and it doesn’t make good reading at times.

Never mind though, I’ve just strapped my luggage onto my old 1150 and in about 15 minutes I’ll ride off into the rain to spend a night or two camping at Dent and taking a carefree ride around the area. I’ll probably do somewhere around 750 miles before I come home Tuesday (I’ve been told to add a night onto my original plan) and I don’t intent checking anything while I’m away because I checked the oil and tyres yesterday.

Well put, Giles !!

I’ll buy another BMW tomorrow , it just wouldn’t be the latest imitation of what they think people want .

Have to fully agree with Giles regarding BMW , however, it never fails to amaze those who will zealously defend BMW ignoring or down playing any issues whether they are large or small, niggling or potentially life threatening and then without hesitation rush to their dealers on the mere whiff of a rumour that a new model to demand to be first in line to purchase as an yet unseen or untested model.
My 1150 had a couple of issues with the final drive bearings over 9 years , my r1200gsa tc was a cracking bike, my early r1200gsa wc was an utter POS with continuous problems over 3 years , my new gsa basic is a fairly sorted bike (crap switchgear withstanding), however , BMW continue to add extra complexity, electronics whilst forgetting the basics of premium build quality on a premium priced bike

Giles has nailed it :thumb

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again; I’d buy another GS if/ when BMW get their act together. I drive a BMW car and am very impressed with it. I’ve had over a dozen BMW cars, with no major issues whatsoever, and wouldn’t consider any other mainstream brand in the future. They just need to apply the same quality control to their bikes now.

Or just make the cars shit...
