Mine is a 2007 ROW model. That is, it has no charcoal canister. Also,I have never over-filled a motorcyle with gas. Especially not this bike which up until now I could fill normally and it would take the full specification of 33 litres without a drop of gasoline exiting below the bike from the drain hoses.
However, after getting my bike back from a recent BMW Dealer repair on an unrelated matter they told me that they dismantled and cleaned the tank to deal with grit and water in the tank. I think they also changed the software. Now the bike has started to "puke petrol" from both bottom drain hoses when I try to fill it normally.
Yesterday the bike read 21 km of gas remaining on the reserve and physically I checked and there was almost no gas in the tank. I went to fill it and put in 29.4 litres (its capacity and specification is 33 litres). I fill the bike slowly and it takes the 33 litres without incident and the bike's readout indicates I have about 540 km. remaining when full. Yesterday the bike gushed about six litres via both drain tubes soaking the area and the back tire. Gushing like when you would open a tap. The bike's readout read 420 km. available instead of the usual 540 or so normally and the "bars" on the dash readout did not go all the way to the top as normal. The bike continued to pour out gas until the level was about 9 cm. below the lowest point of the winglets on the rubber bung in the filling hole of the tank. Normally I can fill up to the bottom of the hole of the rubber bung without incident. The readout at this point said I had about 394 km remaining at the point it stopped leaking out gas.
Rode it carefully 45 km. it to the dealer (here in Mexico) who pulled the tank, checked the drain hoses were correctly routed, not pinched and anything else obviously wrong. I had replacement O rings for the high pressure gas lines so we put those on while we were in there. The rubber bung was fitting loosely unlike before. He did not further dismantle the tank at that point. The tank had not much gas in it by hefting it and by looking. So I went to the corner gas station and tried to put 8 litres into it. It gushed out about 6 litres rapidly out of both drain hoses.
My rough calculation is that I now have a tank capacity of about 24 or 23 litres of fuel instead of the usual 33 litres. Aside from the health and safety issues of having a tank that bathes your tire and ground in fuel I want my tank capacity back and functioning normally as before.
Anyone had this before? What solved it? What could be causing the bike to prematurely spill its gas out the drain hoses before it reaches its normal levels? We now have detected that the rubber bung has a tear in it. But I don't see how that can account for all of this problem? Something broken in the internals on the right side of the tank? All help appreciated!
