I've experienced the same frustrations and mentioned in an earlier post in this thread how you need to redline the bike in 5th and then swap up to E if you stand any chance of getting beyond 200kph (125mph). No engine braking!
I think the Autobahn situation you describe is a good explanation for the popularity of the sports box in Germany. Over here, thankfully, it's still relatively common to be able to cruise at a constant 90mph on most motorways outside of peak times (before anybody goes off on one . . . I'm excluding M25, M1, M6 thru Brum, M4, blah blah blah - OK, in fact I'm only referring to my regular twice weekly trip from Jct 15 of the M1 to Jct 21). So, I tend to ride everywhere in 5th as top (still good for 120mph) and save E for extended cruising.
