6th gear

Dave:
I've experienced the same frustrations and mentioned in an earlier post in this thread how you need to redline the bike in 5th and then swap up to E if you stand any chance of getting beyond 200kph (125mph). No engine braking!
I think the Autobahn situation you describe is a good explanation for the popularity of the sports box in Germany. Over here, thankfully, it's still relatively common to be able to cruise at a constant 90mph on most motorways outside of peak times (before anybody goes off on one . . . I'm excluding M25, M1, M6 thru Brum, M4, blah blah blah - OK, in fact I'm only referring to my regular twice weekly trip from Jct 15 of the M1 to Jct 21). So, I tend to ride everywhere in 5th as top (still good for 120mph) and save E for extended cruising.

So if I understand what has been said so far (which I doubt being a bear of little brain (more pooh for Simon E))
My 1150 will show 85mph at 4000 rpm which is the overdrive box but my RID shows 6 instead of E which would indicate a non overdrive box.

Oh nurse, I think it is time far a lie down in a cool dark room again!!

:(

Keith,

Help is at hand - there's a simple solution to this..... As you know, the LCD display is made up of 7 segments. If you carefully open up the FID, you can remove the bottom left-hand LCD segment. Put it all back together and, HEY PRESTO! the "6" becomes an "E"!

The only down side is that the 1 becomes half-size, 3 becomes a backwards c with a line underneath it and 4 becomes a small "u".

2 and 5 will be normal.....

I think I need a lie down too......

Oops,

Just spotted my mistake above above. It should read, "If you carefully open up the FID, you can remove the bottom RIGHT-hand LCD segment."

Apologies to anyone who already tried the mod and wondered why the FID read N in first gear and T in Top....

You've obviously got the Overdrive box, but with the later LED display showing 6 instead of E. Whether this is a balls up at BMW or a move to replace all displays with 6 instead of E I have no idea. But, what I do know is my rev counter is a better indicator of what box I've got than an LED display!

well..., i've exactly the same idea!
normally day-to-day riding i'll use til 5th gear (just like when the
R1100GS only has 5 gears); when i'm on the
autobahn and wanted a less vibration and relax ride; i'll use the
'over drive'! :D

heard somewhere that extended cruising in sport's 6th will cause
some to have numbness in their hands/fingers due to the sport
box having more vibrations...;)

cheers,
kaz
p.s. does the Adv have the option for a overdrive gearbox...?

The box itself doesn't have more vibrations ;) ,only the fact that the engine rpm is higher for the same road speed. Synchronisation of the throttle bodies will almost completely eliminate vibes anyway.

As important as the vibration level is the frequency. Some people have more problems with lower frequency vibes than higher. (FYI - this is an area that is designed into vehicle suspension and (on cars) body systems. Complete vehicles are sometimes "tuned" for different areas)

I think not.....

Had a demo on a adventure with less than a 1000 mls on the clock and at 85mph was really vibey, surely the throttle bodies
can't go out of sync that quickly.

You're assuming they were in synch in the first place!

Yes BMW's top mechanic was flown in from germany especially to
check and adjust the throttle bodies just before my demo:D
