Am I useless?

Hi all,

My GSA finally arrived on Saturday, proudly took it out with my good lady, and managed to drop it twice, both sides, doing 0 mph...

Am I useless or does this happen to other people as well?

Also, can I repair the now scratched cylinder head guards or will it be a case of buying new ones?
I have no intention to do so as judging by the way I am going, it won't be long before i drop it again.

Also, I managed to slightly scratch the driveshaft casing at the same time. Any advice on repairing that?

I don't normally treat nbkes or cars like queens, but I also don't normally crash/drop them the first day of ownership, hence my slight dissapointment and remedial enquiries.

I scuffed a pannier lid and rocker cover when I rolled off mine :D these things happen so don’t beat yourself up over it…
 
Get used to the bike without a passenger. When you feel you know your way about, add the misses....;)

In my defence, I did go out on my own for half an hour before the missus joined. Then and only then did i drop it... Hence, she is a jinx! :aidan

Any advice on how to sort the scratches out?

I wouldn't do anything until you find your footing. Headguards you can repaint, Drive casing...put a decal over it saying "This way up"...:D

Tis a beast of a bike for sure....:rob

Someone on here admitted dropping his brand new bike in the dealers showroom, so you're not alone. :D I've dropped mine twice - and learnt a lesson both times. You're only an idiot if you keep making the same mistake.

sounds like it... you should let one of us have a go with her and see if the incident repeats itself - purely for experimental purposed of course :aidan

btw, these don't have to be mutually exclusive ;) but yep it happens to others, the trick is to stop fecking about and ride it - all my low speed drops happened because I dithered, get the clutch out, give the bike some power and it'll be fine...

sounds like you might want to consider a low seat though... oh and have a hunt around there's a few tips about picking them up, they only get scratched if you drag them as you pick them up, dropped mine more than a couple of times without any damage at all. Buy replacement bits and keep them on a shelf for Ron ;)
 
The most important lesson, as Liquidlan so eloquently put it, is to give it plenty of throttle and stop pussyfooting/trying to be smooth...

On both frops the damage was done before I picked it up.

On a separate note liquidlan, you can have a go with her anytime, but you will have to keep her after that... Deal? :augie :D

back to the original question...

Depends how deep the scratches are. If it's just through the paint then use wet n' dry until you have a smooth surface then respray. The painting is the hard bit both in terms of quality of finish and the right colour as silver is a real sod to match. If you do a search you'll find plenty of posts on the subject especially if you type in 'corrosion'.

If the scratches are deeper into the ally like say 0.5mm or so you'll have to either cut back enough metal to get to the bottom of them or try a filler.

It's not an easy job to do a good cosmetic 'invisible mend' so as your bike is brand spankers I'd seriously think about finding a professional paint shop to do it for you.

As for the head guards, might be an idea to leave em' alone for a bit, at least until you luck improves before you worry about fixing the up as they clearly have done what they were designed for.

p.s. that's rough luck you've had but a mate of mine actually dropped his bike in the showroom before he'd even got a leg over it...
 
Thet Catch you out every now and again!! Nearly dropped mine getting on it the other day ,I managed to develop a hernia catching it but the bike is fine.Use it and you get used to the weight,most people drop them after they get back on in the spring after laying the bike up for winter.Leave the marked tinwear ,but get some spares for when you sell it:thumb2
