Hi guys, reasonable serious posting...

we are currently looking at a property in Banwell and want to get some feedback on the area. I've lived in Clevedon for a while and my wife has spent time in and around Weston, but we both moved out of the area a while back.

Any feed back good or bad more than welcome just need to get a feel for the place and the area.

thanks in advance.

From my experience of Banwell, it is a nice place providing you don't live near the main road which is a terrible bottle neck for traffic going/coming from the Weston area and the M5. I used to ride through everyday. They have been campaigning for a bypass for years! If you want quiet I'd look elswhere, maybe Sand or Winscombe which are both just nearby and over the hill. We went to view a property there for the MIL, it was a lovely place but when you went into the garden you could hear the M-way as a constant drone in the background. I expect you would stop noticing it if you lived there though. No place is perfect :)

Cheers mate, its good to get a local view of these area, the place we are looking at is up on high street (literally in this case) and yes you can hear the M% from the garden but you can also hear loads of birds... personally I used to live on Barnwood Road in Gloucester (4 lanes wide and 50 yards from the railway line) I know all about noises you get used to :D

Any idea if the bypass is gaining any traction?

Any other views welcome.

I agree with Atkule. I've often ridden through Banwell and it does get congested at times. An alternative that I would consider in addition to the places he has suggested would be Axbridge, a lovely old medieval town the layout of which has changed little over the centuries. It has very little through traffic as a bypass was built many years ago. Close to Cheddar Gorge but within easy reach of Weston (via Banwell)!

Interesting, I'd always thought Axbridge was a lot further south. Whats it like to get to London from there? We'd looked at Cheddar and Banwell and figured Banwell would have easier access for the M5/Bristol/Rail and airports...

I'm an IT consultant and need to get to London fairly often, my wife is a HR consultant and is all over the place...

Axbridge is only 7 miles to J22 on the M5 with easy access to Taunton which has direct trains to Paddington.

It's only 4 miles from Banwell and from there a further 9 miles into Weston which has trains to Bristol and London.

Its also closer to the A38 which takes you straight up to Bristol airport.

My brother lives there and regularly drives to London.

Hope this helps!

No idea but I'm sure there are websites devoted to it if you have a quick trawl.
FYI Liquid I live a few miles South of Cheddar right out in the stix but I can get to the M5 in 15mins :thumb2 As suggested maybe try looking further South :)
edit: as HumBug suggested, Axbridge is very nice, definitely worth a look!

Just my twopennorth.
I find that the A303 to M3 London is a good easy run 90% of the time so look even further south if you want too :thumb2
anywhere twixt Honiton and Mere is a lovely area to live, not as good as Devon tho':augie

Cheers Proff, we've looked around that area, there are some great places and really good value at least the last time we looked... just not much coming up at the moment... found this one which I really like, but it just not one for the wife...

Check Wrington out. Very well positioned between the A38 and A370, and very close to lovely countryside

Banwell

I've lived around the area all my life and been in Banwell for the last 5 years, Nice place except for bad traffic in the village and terrible for getting to the M5 in the Mornings. Previously I've lived in Churchill and Congresbury which in my opinion are nicer places to live. Also worth a look are Wrington, Sandford and Winscombe.

The reason I'm still in Banwell and just about to move to the other end of the village is the House prices, generally a lot better value for money than the other villages Mentioned.

Was just scrolling down to say... but I see Alan B has beaten me to it. Wrington is a very nice place, just the other side of the A38 towards Clevedon.

Guess what???

We have finally moved!!! It's only taken two to two and a half years, but it's done - most of the time was wasted listening to estate agents explain that they really could sell the old house in a price range that no-one actually ever asked for properties in ie £250k-285

The rest of the time has been wasted dealing with a variety of idiots. The Banwell property (and a holiday that was booked at the same time) fell through on price the couple selling it just couldnt give a straight answer on anything time scales/acceptable price - we'd do a deal, agree a price and timescale and the next day it would be all off because someone knew a guy down the road who might have an extra couple of quid to throw in the pot... I wouldn't mind but the place had been on the market a fair few months when we offered and initially got accepted but hey ho.

The next property was in Uffington and by all accounts unmortgageable as it was suffering from subsidance on at least three fronts, floors needed replacing, there where questions about the state of the first floor and no planning permission for a lot of the extra building work that had been done to the place, but each time something new and worse came up with the place - we took it on the chin and figured it would be worth it once it was all done - final straw was the surveyor laughing at us and asking why we wanted to throw so much money away as the place just wasnt worth it - tried talking to the owners about renegotiating on price as the place was unmortgageable and we couldnt do anything to pursade any of the leaders we spoke to. Trouble was the idiots selling the place lived in cloud cookoo land and couldnt see the problem with a house that was splitting in three directions. To be honest it was a bit of a lucky escape, I took a drive out that way during the recent floods to find that bits of Uffington where under 4 feet of water, this place was ok, but you could only get to it be a buttock clenching 4x4 wade through the floods. Anyway I was able to buy 9cravencommon.com and I figured the whole thing will make an interesting blogg (I am allowed to list the url arent I???)

Finally the good news - we found a great place in Everleigh - I guess its a hamlet about 20 minutes south of Marlborough - loads of work needs to be done here and it looks like nearly all of it will fall to me as the wife has seemed to have taken to watching me carry really heavy things about and make comments like "thats just rediculous carrying something that heavy by yourself" and "if only you told me what to do, I could help"... I guess its a men from mars thing :aidan but this place has given me a great excuse to buy petrol power tools... I now have a petrol strimmer and a petrol hedge trimmer - I still can't quite justify buying a chainsaw (petrol of course) as we only have one tree that needs felling - I guess we do have an open fire but...

I had a look at sit on mowers, but again I can think of better things to spend a grand on, plus it would take up space in my lovely double garage :D god the 12GSA looks small in there.
