I've got an 02, I have owned and ridden many bikes in the 20 years since I passed my test.
the two best are - '88 slab side gsxr 1100
1150 adv

the two things that in my opinion you will have to do are
1.change the rear shock for something along the lines on maxton or ohlins
2.upgrade the lights, go to the gs mods section and look up my recent post.

take your time and find one with the bits on
30 ltr tank
ally luggage and top box
lighting upgrade by BTBR
decent shock
bagglux tank cover and bag
Y piece (replaces catalytic converter)
tobinators (they alter the screen so it doesn't buffet you)
heated grips
and maybe a different seat , depending how you get on with the standard

well that's the spec on mine, all I need now is another set of wheels and it's finished (to put off road tyres on)

great bike ,superb fun to ride

I went from averaging 2000 miles a year to 12000

hope this helps

good hunting

Rob

Oh yes 6k should get you a good one

thanks for the info Rob , all good stuff . slight problem my budget will nearer 4500 than 6000 still it will get me started if i decide to go for it .

The other way round... sort of

Hi Paul, i've owned the four most recent GS's during the past six years including the 1100, 1150, 1150GSA and 1200 and now own a 2003 Blackbird.
The reason for deserting BMW was simply wanting a bit more performance and what i think you'll miss and i've gained is that feeling that when you get on the bike you can get anywhere pretty quickly. Don't get me wrong i've travelled all over Europe on my GS's but once on a motorway or major road the Blackbird just covers distances so effortlessly that whatever the daily distance it's never an issue. Cruising at 90mph (where permitted) becomes tiring on any GS but as a previous entry stated, you're barely ticking over on the Honda. However i would agree that your licence will be a lot safer on the GS. Oh and having tried them all i'd recommend the 1150GSA with a Remus for a great sound and a few more BHP.:)

1) anybody made the switch from blackbird to gs ?

Yup,
Got my 1150 GSA at Christmas and got rid of my Blackbird (97 carbie) last Sunday.
I'll miss a particular style of riding & ANTICS but I'm enjoying a different type & style of machine.
A rest is as good as a change & I can always go back to Large Jap missiles if I want but at the moment I'm wondering why I hadn't done the big adventure bike thing a long time ago.

Go for it, you'll love it.

Blackbird to GS

Hi guy's
My mate who had a Blue Blackbird for five years swopped for a 1200GS that he had not even ridden. He has had the GS for just over a year now and loves every ride he has :bounce1 :bounce1 :bounce1 :bounce1
He bought the GS brand new with all the little extra's that they tell you you need.:nenau :nenau :nenau :nenau :nenau :nenau :nenau :nenau :nenau

I myself changed from v strom 1000 to my 1150 r and am loving every ride.

You will miss the power of the bb allthough its getting harder to use it without being cruxified, the only other thing you will miss is visiting petrol stations as often as you do on the bb.

Sounds Good. Just moved from a BB to a 1200gs bought last week, because I got crucified by an idiot pulling out from a line of cars while I was overtaking on th BB 3 weeks ago. 2 broken ribs and I was lucky.

Seems going so fast is too dangerous nowadays with so many boy racers in Type R's etc.

Early days for me, but the comparative tractor like character of the GS motor is growing on me and the GS is quick enough. The Ride and Handling is also much more suited to the B and C roads I love. The Heated Grips fitted are a surprisingly useful Hit with me - recommended. Should be OE in the UK. Comfort is brilliant.

Toolkit sucks though - can't even remove the back wheel with it!
