122,000 BMW motorbikes recalled

Thousands of BMW motorcycles, including some owned by British bikers, are being recalled because of a possible brake problem, it has been revealed.

The recall, believed to involve around 122,000 machines worldwide, covers various versions of six models.

These include the R 1200 GS Adventure model, versions of which were ridden by Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor in their 2007 Long Way Down biking adventure.

Letters received by British owners of the bikes said vibrations could cause the front brake lines to develop leaks which could allow brake fluid to escape which could lead to a failure of the front brakes.

The other models involved are the R 1200 GS, the R 1200 R, the R 1200 RT, the R 1200 ST and the K 1200 GT.

Hmmmm...

I guess that "Unstoppable" slogan in their propaganda literature can really be taken literally now! :thumb

Maybe that's what they meant all along? :nenau

Oooh ya Bugger !

Few weeks back I did a little bit of rough road stuff and I mean a little compared with what some of you guys do,quite enjoyed meself and headed off home with a very mucky bike.
Next day I was going up to Huddersfield to see Tony Archer and get me seat sorted. As I left my garage I remembered I had a blown headlight bulb so decided to sort it.On opening the assembly and unclipping the little wire clip thingy it dropped to the ground broken, had to search for it and on doing so noticed front offside caliper looked very wet ! rest of bike was dry !
Realised I had a problem ! Doooh !
Brake fluid leaking out.
Decided to carry on with my intended journey with caution popping in to Pidcocks at Long Eaton enroute.
They said they would take a look, and hey presto about 45 minutes later, bike returned problem solved, brake caliper cleaned as if nothing had ever happened !
Now,no disrespect to Piddys but did they know of this problem then ?
They certainly didnt mess about getting me going again and I didnt expect that, thought I'd have to leave it with them and get a lift home !
Mmmm,makes you wonder eh !
Thanks again to Piddys.

Sounds like a different problem to me

BMW North Oxford have around 300 bikes in the local area due to be recalled.........they're delighted.

Mine's in next Thursday.

Apparently one Police bike had it happen and thats the only one they've heard of.......he was on a shout but luckily stopped in time.

Hey ho - it'll get a clean at least :)

not sure but my 2007 model is included - the dealers know about it but some haven't "got around to letting people know"

Ditto

My 09 GS is in for 12000 service tomorrow at Northampton, they just called me to say the service may be 3 hours longer due to the recall on this brake issue.

3 HOURS:blast

Ask them to loan you the 1000RR while you wait, that'll make the time pass quickly :augie

My late '08 GS-A had the first mod done last year. I've just rang Williams in Manchester and they confirm that it's been recalled for a 2nd more up to date mod: Same/similar geometry with a strengthening sleeve.

It's a bit worrying that the current component still has a weakness having already been modified. Having said that, I've had no problems during 11000 miles on mine.

If you think that your bike might need modifying then I'd ring your dealer to get in the queue ahead of the people who first hear about it by a letter from BMW. It sounds like the dealers are going to busy fitting brake lines.

Is this problem at the Fork brace? I had a bike from a Guy off here a couple of years ago and he had the brace break where the line (s) go through the brace. This seems a daft idea as the thing is weakened by drilling through it. Think about this Guys, if that brace gives way there is nothing holding the forks to the bike. that is friggin' scary.

My GT was done saturday, easy job. it was just the upper line that was replaced the lines on the calipers are untouched.
