Brake Problem

04 1200GS, ABS servo brake system. Been having an intermittant problem with the brakes.
Could ride for an hour or 10 mins pull the brake and the warning light comes on. Sometimes the servo stops working sometimes not. Turn bike off and on again and it cures it sometimes (sometimes not). On one ocassion the speedo stopped workin
Anyone any ideas?

I've had the same problem on my 06 gs although I get a flashing brake warning Light and no speedo everything working ok just pull over restart and it goes back to normal, don't know why????? Boo

Speedo not working is nomally due to the fornt-wheel ABS sensor not being read.

Make sure the sensor and the ABS ring and clean. I used to have a problem with the ABS sensor not being read after I washed the bike.

You should be able to check that the sensor is working, it is just a proximity sensor.

There's been plenty of these faults on this site. I had the same, turned out to be corrosion on the rear brake bulb! BMW said that this at times may cause the servo etc to get confused! I've an '06 as well and the rear bulb is open to the elements and gets quite clagged up.

i was lead to believe the speedo/abs came from the rear sensor in the final drive,for what it takes ,whip the rear wheel off and take the sensor out and give it a good wipe if its covered in swarf.only a ten minute job,even if the sensor is knacked its easy to change

It is the rear wheel sensor that drives the speedometer. Have a look at the thread on changing final drive oil if you're not sure where it is, then remove and clean it. It's worth changing the FD oil at the same time unless you know it's been done recently.

I had similar gremlins on my '04 R1200GS. One that puzzled me was that the trips wouldnt change on pressing button. Long story short, Odyssey 535 Battery fitted and all gremlims gone.

Brake problem

After a ride out on Sunday on a 06 1200 gs with abs and servo assistance stopped for a chin wag before making way home to find no servo assistance and brake failure light on, made for an interesting last 10 miles or so!
On further investigation brake light found to be on intermittently checked bulb and connections all ok.Checked rear brake switch, found grit lodged between plastic trim and switch actuating arm holding switch in on position,actually it fell out when I removed the trim, us mechanics like to call this diagnostics.Brakes are now working as they should with no warning lights.The servo system must have input from the front and rear brake switches in order to work you cannot disconnect the offending switch to isolate the problem switch.
I wonder how many servo units have been changed in dealerships in error?
Hope this may point you in the right direction.

Well according to Joe Duffy Motorrad tis the abs modulator thats fucked. €2000 to fix eek
Reckon ill be fuckin off the abs/servo doodad and runnin standard brakes
