Cam chain 1150gs

How difficult is it to change cam chain and what would it cost ?
Do you mean the Cam Chain tensioner? That's what seems to give the problems on the left cylinder, leading to noisy cam chain rattle when cold. If that's what you mean, seems like a simple enough job with posts here and on ADVrider.com (I think...) on how to do it. Updated tensioner available from Motorworks and others no doubt.
HTH.

My mates 1150 reached 300K miles on the original cam chains. And i work on a few 100K plus milers still on the originals.

In fact i've never seen a worn out cam chain.

cool i did change the chain tensioner the other day using the advrider site very easy with the photos about to change oil for 20/50 minral as some dick put fully synth in

Timing Chain Rattle

Another rattle could be from the Vertical timing chain at the front of the motor. Mine (1150) does it at tickover when the oil pressure is at its lowest then goes as the revs increase.

It has done it for the 10,000 miles that I have owned it, and other than being slightly annoying, hasn't caused a problem.

Think it's quite a big job and not fully sure if I could do it.:blast

My bike had the same problem, when it it had done 140,000 miles, bought (vertial) sprockets, chain, blade and tensioner. The noise was coming from the front of the engine. On stripping no wear evident on any components. Swopped anyway. No difference. The crankshaft sprocket runs at twice the speed of the other sprockets. So very slim chance that the horizontal chains and sprockets will be worn.Steptoe gives good advice, and from my own experience chains don't wear much at all. The noise just went away, eventually. Best advice, let it develop, I bet it does'nt.

I have had my bike just under a year now. When I got it it was real noisy.

Over the last year I have done the valve adjustment, changed the oil from fully synthetic to mineral (20-50), balanced the throttle bodies and changed the left cam chain tensioner. It really is like a different bike now.

I am no mechanic and although it took me some time to do these things I have got there in the end. She sounds real sweet now.

So do all the standard things, it won't cost a whole load of money and see where you stand then with rattles and noises.

oil changed this morning fully synth came out like water put in my mineral 20w 50 much quiter bike and nice oil much happier rider -result

Sounds like you have done ok. Mine has had the exact same noise for 10,000 miles now, even a fast idle stops it but at normal idle speed it makes a sort of chaka chaka chaka noise - really rattly right at the front of the engine, it doesn't affect the running of the bike at all, just annoys me!!
