It's that time again as we camp at Skaftafell.

A busy place and centre for walking with an informative visitor centre.

They're very keen not to lose any tourists here.

We take a walk up to the glacier.

The snout of the glacier shows how it's become a victim of volcanic ash.

A 'Sandur' is glacial outwash plain formed by sediments deposited by meltwater at the terminus of a glacier according to Wikiwotsit.

But consider an erupting volcano under that glacier and you have the potential for one hell of a Sandur!
Covering 1000-sq-km the Skiedarsandur which we're about to cross is the largest in the world and this part of the R1 road was only constructed in 1974, the road and bridges have at times been washed away like match sticks following eruptions.

Although we didn't feel lucky at the time battling strong winds laden with ash, driving rain and freezing cold, only a few days after we passed a volcano did erupt under a glacier!

The road was washed away with one of the main bridges effectively shutting the only road in a instant, it's still closed as repairs are frantically being made.

These pics are from the local paper.

Thankfully oblivious to what was soon to happen, we set off on the first part in half reasonable weather.

You may want to do a bit of checking as they were initially ferrying vehicles slowly across with a truck, then a temporary bridge was being put in place, but I read today that the engineers didn't think a temp bridge would be safe enough so were working around the clock to build a new 'permanent' one which would take up to 3 weeks to complete.

EDIT: You could send Farmer Palmer a PM, I'm sure he'll know far more about the current situation.

Islands og Eldgos er ekki gott.......!

Amazing pictures!

If only the Norrona stopped in Lerwick, Shetland again.....We used to get to Iceland in three days from here including a days riding in the Faroes and a few hours in Shetland.

Two of us on one bike with a cabin......Early season was £830 including the Northlink ferry from Aberdeen to Shetland. The most we paid was £1180 return but that was mid season.

Last may(2010) I flew from Glasgow to Keflavik(Reykjavik) for £240 return with my Thorn Sherpa touring/exp bicycle. Then pedalled down to Vik and back including The Westmann Islands and the Golden Circle(800miles riding/ten days)

The volcano on Eyjafjallajokull was still spewing ash and the conditions between Hvollsvollur/Vik were truly dreadful, I was wearing my 'ashmask' but turned round as the ashstorms, headwinds and icy rain with ash wasn't really safe at that time. The campsites were deserted covered in ash and of course free and I even found an abandoned Icelandic flag at Seljallandsfoss, I still have it and it's still ashstained.....!

The rest of the trip was great weather and I returned home healthy suntanned and apart from a slight 'smokers cough' fitter than Sven the butchers dog.

This year we were all packed and ready to go......Hired a bike from www.vikingbiking.is but changed our plans and hired a car instead to drive the ringroad as there was a lot of snow in the north.....Then a few days before departure the southern ringroad was closed due to the eruption at Grimsvotn although my Icelandic friends assured me the 'northern ringroad was still passable with care(Icelandic care maybe)

Then as we'd finished packing at around midnight, checked our flights and they'd been cancelled at 10.30pm due to the eruption at Grimsvotn.....!

I believe the only Scottish/Icelandic cancellation but it would have taken days to get on another so we jumped on the GS went to the Ardennes/Black Forest instead and had at great time at the Touratech Travel Weekend.

I'm wondering if we should 'try' to get back to Iceland this november but the travelling then can be really difficult even with studded tyres and my friend Einar lives in Eskifjordur a small fishing town south of Seydisfjordur where the ferry from Denmark docks. It's an 800 mile round trip from Reykjavik on the 'southern' Ringroad so i'm not so sure about this trip and there's still a lot of 'rumbling' going on under the icecaps .......!

Those excellent photos of tim's make me want to go back again though.:bow
