Planes, Trains and Automobiles...

The view from Dead Horse State Park is fantastic, almost impossible to comprehend how much land you can see.
Great trip and write up, as usual, thanks for taking us along.
Is Moab Brewery still there?

Not a great night's sleep - and I'm moving rooms again today
lol8.gif

I keep thinking "This place is alright - and I can do yada yada yada" I then book a room via Booking.com, only to find the same type of room isn't available. Doesn't bother me because the rates from Booking (Expedia by any other name) make it worthwhile - but I expect the staff will be glad to see the back of me...

Today is going to be a lesson in memory and distance. My plan is to pop back down to Blanding, then turn right at Shirttail Junction, then turn left towards the Moki Dugway, Goosenecks State Park and then come back north via Bluff.

Shouldn't take long.

IMG_1469-X3.jpg

On the way out of town I stop at the Moab Diner and have an excellent (if a little spicy) breakfast...

IMG_1471-X4.jpg

Peter fills my water bottle full of iced water.

I briefly talk to an elderly couple across the aisle from me, the wife having recognised my accent. She said she'd like to visit one day and I tell her it's a great place with screwed up politics - buy that should be something she's used to. Her face hardens and she says, "I'd choose Donald Trump over George Washington".

O.K.

She doesn't speak to me again and leaves shortly afterwards...
ImaPoser.gif

I pay for my meal and get on the road, heading south towards Blanding. It's 65 miles.
eek7.gif
Surely it didn't use to be that far...
hmmm.gif

IMG_1476-X4.jpg

No matter, I head out of town and follow a pair of Harleys south at about 70pmh...

IMG_1480-X4.jpg

Today you get an arch - Wilson Arch...

IMG_1483-X4.jpg

An hour and a bit later, I arrive at Blanding. There's a right turn on the way out called Shirttail Junction. For reasons that bypass good sense, I don't have Agnes plugged in today - don't need her - I can remember the route...
patch.gif

We exit Blanding and I then see the junction and turn right...

IMG_1485-X4.jpg

The road is quiet, well-surfaced and it's a pleasant drive. Except it's already pretty warm and I subsequently have the roof up and the ac on...

IMG_1494-X4.jpg

I know the left turn isn't far down here...

IMG_1499-X4.jpg

...except that it appears it is...

IMG_1500-X4.jpg

Thankfully the junction appears - only a few miles. Twenty-two miles. Oo-er..
bluduh.gif

No matter, let's get to it...

IMG_1504-X4.jpg

Eventually I get to the top of the Dugway...

IMG_1505-X4.jpg

...somewhere I have visited dozens of times in the past 20 years - but always by motorcycle...

IMG_1506-X4.jpg

The U-turns are metalled (after a fashion), but the straights are gravel. With a five-litre rear-wheel-drive car, you'd better believe I left the traction control on...
lol8.gif

IMG_1513-X4.jpg

I (carefully) drive down. The road you can see in the middle of the above pic is Valley of the Gods Road - which, were I on two wheels, would be my route back to the 191 north. Not in this car, though...

I get to the bottom of the Dugway and immediately see signs for Goosenecks State Park...

IMG_1535-X4.jpg

Despite reports of flash-floods in the area, this rebuilt wash is the only damage I come across (although there's a lot of sand on the road)...

IMG_1525-X4.jpg

Goosenecks is only $5 to enter, and has some impressive canyons...

IMG_1524-X4.jpg

Right - let's plug Agnes in. One hundred miles to the hotel...
fpalm.gif

Sooner we set off, the sooner we get there. I notice it's 94F down here at Goosenecks, compared with 86 at the top of the Dugway...

IMG_1536-X4.jpg

Looks like we might be in for some weather on the way back...

IMG_1544-X4.jpg

Quick 'on the hoof' pic of the other end of Valley of the Gods...

IMG_1554-X4.jpg

I stop at Twin Rocks Café in Bluff...

IMG_1550-X4.jpg

...for Killer Nachos...

IMG_1551-X4.jpg

...and lemonade. They were both excellent
DukeGirl.gif

IMG_1549-X4.jpg

Back on the road, I stop in Moab to refuel (26.9mpg), then wheel my bags up to my bedroom.

Good day - where to tomorrow

Nice trip, great pics as usual

Do you miss the bike trip thing?

I guess a soft top convertible is somewhat similar

I don't - but I'd not want to be on a bike in these temperatures anyway. I'm likely heading towards cooler weather at the coast tomorrow...

Moab is staggeringly beautiful and almost unreal.

Having been to that area on a bike in 90f plus a few times, I can see the attraction of aircon

This just isn't working.

Every day since I arrived, I have been trying to work up some enthusiasm for what I'm doing.

But I can't.

There's clearly something wrong with me, and I have already contacted my medical professional back in the UK.

Someone shared this with me the other day, and I'm unable to find words that better express how I feel now.

I fucking hate it.

I have no energy, a vague stomach upset most of the time, headaches (despite keeping well hydrated). But the worst thing of all is that I don't have any appetite for anything. Everything is just 'Meh'...

I had a text chat with Jorge last night and decided that I'm just going to stage myself west, via some decent hotels, then go on a whale-watching trip at Monterey on Sunday, before flying back on Monday.

So today I drove the five hours by Interstate to St George, Utah, where I'm staying in a very nice room at LaQuinta...

IMG_1593-XL.jpg

Once I got my bags in, I popped out to the local pharmacy, where the chap suggested Sudogest Sinus & Allergy. I've taken one and can have another in about four hours.

I grab some bottles of Gatorade from the gas station where I fill the car up (26.2 mpg - but it's an 80mph limit), then go back to the hotel to work out where I am going next...

Oh sorry about this. Hopefully you can try and enjoy the rest of your trip. I've certainly enjoyed your pics and report.

Sorry to hear you are struggling right now Mike.

You may, or may not, be surprised to know you are not alone with your feelings. Many here feel exactly the same as you, many have lost their excitement and buzz for doing the things they once enjoyed the most.

One thing is for sure, your trip reports over the years have brought enjoyment to many, both here and on ADVRider.
MikeO's inspection of the colonies.
MikeO's inspection continues.
Be very proud of that.

I'm wondering if perhaps you're pushing yourself too hard. Everyone loves your trips and write ups but are you now spending more time and thought in trying to please 'us' rather than enjoying yourself. Has it now subconsciously become a chore, to try to out do your last trip? You definitely set the bar really high with the quality of your writing and photo that only a few can match.

Funny that you should say that.

I noticed a 'flatness' in your writing during this trip, but really did not like to say anything out of place.

I just put it down to the fact that you were not on a bike.

Try and do something away from the car as you must be racking up some miles and time just driving.

This too shall pass .

Be kind to yourself.

Thanks for sharing and for rare honesty

I have an odd night's sleep, waking at 0200 in a muck sweat. I have a wash and move to another part of the bed and use a new pillow, then slept straight through to 0730 and wake feeling well rested.

I have shower and feel a lot better. I wheel my bags out to the car - parked in a slot for which I qualify...

IMG_1598-X4.jpg

...and back out...

IMG_1599-X4.jpg

I'm soon back on the Interstate heading for Las Vegas...

IMG_1601-X4.jpg

This is a busy road - I set the cruise control at 80, but it's difficult to maintain...

IMG_1606-X4.jpg

I see this chap...

IMG_1607-X4.jpg

I'm not convinced. Wouldn't a carpenter have a pick-up?
hmmm.gif

IMG_1608-X4.jpg

A couple of hours into the journey I stop at this understated establishment in the unlikely named town of Primm,
Nevada, to get some breakfast...

IMG_1610-X4.jpg

UB40 are still touring...

IMG_1611-X4.jpg

The IHOP Breakfast Sampler does the job...
DukeGirl.gif

Back on the road - I have over 350 miles to cover today...

IMG_1616-X4.jpg

As I enter California, a series of signs and speed limits drags everyone's speed down. All trucks have to stop and be inspected, but the booths for cars are empty and we are on our way again in no time. The ensuing snarl in traffic, from hundreds of trucks re-joining the Interstate, can be felt for 20 miles or so, though...

Quite soon, Agnes turns me off the Interstate at Tehachapi, where I refuel (26.9mpg) and then check in to my nice room at the Best Western...

IMG_1619-X3.jpg

They have an excellent guest laundry - and I have a pocket full of quarters, so I wash the bag of toxic waste in my large bag - it's easier to pack clean clothes than dirty ones...

@MikeO out if interest, how much is a room for the night over there?
Are they pre booked or do you just find a place wherever you end up that day?

I know you don't seem to do trains but the Tehachapi train loop sounds interesting if you're passing.

Anyone else try to track Mike's route on Google earth? I've never been there, and probably never will, but that America is quite a big place isn't it?

Paul it varies widely

Did Boston and the town was about 20 miles away and even tho it was a small town even the motel 6 and super 8 were 3 figures - and that was trying to book them miles in advance

Stayed in a hampton slightly further out and waa about 80 quid

Airbnb far cheaper - doing central boston this time and all the big chain hotels were 150+ gbp

Found an airbnb the other side of Logan 5 miles from town still 60 quid a night tho

Did oakland last year and the moxy 10 mins walk from fox theater was 170 usd but being on foot was better - again central frisco was $$$$$

But then Pennsylvania airbnb in very rural was 40 buck a night and the nearest hamption waa 90 but in a different state :ROFLMAO:

Ps thanks mike

Hopefully the meh runs away when you show it breakfast or an omg view again

This looks a great trip . Sorry you are not enjoying it as much . This can happen on any trip . There is a lot of time to process things maybe too much . The meaning of life etc , why are we here ? What's the point of it all ? I will do the Pacific highway in a Convertible some day . Hope you chirp up its a fantastic road trip report . Many thanks

Mike
Firstly i love your trip reports

Is it possible that your lack lustre feelings may be down to having done it and seen it so many times before that the shine and awe has wained a little - i do hope so - maybe the sparkle would return by venturing somewhere new or less travelled by you
