Planes, Trains and Automobiles...

Mike
Firstly i love your trip reports

Is it possible that your lack lustre feelings may be down to having done it and seen it so many times before that the shine and awe has wained a little - i do hope so - maybe the sparkle would return by venturing somewhere new or less travelled by you

My thoughts too, I hope the feelgood creeps back in for you Mike, a distraction or a break from your usual may be just what the doctor ordered, a suggestion; continue taking the pics and making observations but update the journal every other day to ease the pressure on yourself.

Maybe he just needs to speak to people...Not just waiting/serving staff....Just a thought.
He may already be doing so and has not mentioned it, in which case, I will just shut the fuck up. (y)

Slept relatively well, but woke with a sore throat (again) and was quite worried about the colour of what I spat into the sink - until I remembered I'd been drinking bright blue coloured Gatorade last night...

Whatever bug I have got is definitely on the mend. I have a shower and shave and, having largely packed yesterday, I'm out of the door before 0900 into a beautiful sunny day at a pleasant 70F...

I decide to let nature be my hairdryer, and have the roof down as I head back towards Paso Robles, where I stayed what seems like weeks ago...

IMG_1625-X4.jpg

This isn't getting the inner man fed - I spot a Denny's (their 4th July bunting already in evidence) and order a minor heart-attack-on-a-plate...

...in the shape of a Philly Cheesesteak Omelette with Jalapeños...

IMG_1631-X3.jpg

In the time it has taken me to eat it, the temperature has increased to 88F and - knowing I'll be travelling through some pretty dusty country - wimp out and put the roof up.

I'm listening to Vulcan 607 by Rowland White - a book I read several years ago, but which has now been released as an audiobook. It narrates the story of Operation Black Buck - the Vulcan bombing raid on Port Stanley airfield in 1982 - which sort of committed the UK to their mission to retake the Falkland Islands. It's an excellent tale, well told.

We're north of Bakersfield now, and the countryside is producing either oil, with fields full of nodding-donkey pumps, or fruit, with acres of orchards...

IMG_1636-X3.jpg

These guys earn their pay - it must be 90+F out there now, and they're laying hot bitumen...

Agnes eventually turns me onto the 101 North - the central reservation planted thick with flowering bushes...

...before steering me towards the Pacific Coast Highway and my destination for today - Monterey...

IMG_1650-X3.jpg

This chap looks very proud of his lettuces...

IMG_1651-X4.jpg

As I get close to Monterey, the temperature drops to about 70F - it's the coastal fog/low cloud that anyone who has travelled in the Bay area knows only too well. Never mind, it gives me an excuse to put the roof down for the last few miles...

I stop and refuel (30.5mpg), then check in to my comfortable room at the Super 8 at Fisherman's Wharf. Quite what the words "Fisherman's Wharf" have to do with the location of the hotel is one of life's mysteries.

IMG_1656-X4.jpg

I'm here for two nights, then moving up the coast a little to a Hampton Inn for my final night. The lion's share of the driving is done now - I'm just going to potter about for a couple of days. I may try to go whale-watching on Sunday...

Aah, Operation Black Buck, the record for the longest bombing mission ever, pity the crabfats totally missed the runway after all that effort to get there! A glorious fail.

30th June 2024

I had a day off yesterday - caught up on some sleep.

Today is a totally shitty day.

I have booked myself on a whale-watching trip at lunchtime, but wake feeling nauseous. I ablute and pack my bags and still don’t feel right. I drive down to Fisherman’s Wharf and watch people in the park for a bit, but feel no better…

IMG_1662-X4.jpg

I decide to drive inland a bit, and take a slow mosey to Salinas…

IMG_1664-X4.jpg

I’m not up for three hours at sea feeling like this - I feel crap.

I pull into the reception area of the Hampton Inn at Salinas to turnaround, when, with a loud crash, I drive into a concrete planter…

IMG_1667-X4.jpg

Well, fuck.
bluduh.gif

IMG_1666-X4.jpg

I can make up any number of excuses about driving from bright sunshine into shadow etc - but the truth of the matter is I just didn't notice it.
fpalm.gif

The desk staff come out - their only concern that I'm OK. I park the car and then borrow one of their phones to call the 1-800 -IM -A -KNOB Avis helpline. The chap at the other end of the phone is really helpful and assures me he'll get me back on the road as soon as he can. He puts me on hold for a few minutes then apologises and says the only Avis office that isn't just about to close for the day is at San Jose Airport - would I be willing to accompany the car there and pick up a replacement? Sure, why not.

Within the hour, the tow truck turns up.

IMG_1668-X4.jpg

The driver - who is great - speaks NO English whatsoever (I can't even get his name), but this doesn’t stop him explaining in great detail what he's going to do. I nod and smile - his enthusiasm is cheering me up...

IMG_1669-X4.jpg

He loads the Mustang on the back - then we drive to a compound that belongs to the firm and he takes it off. I'm concerned - but, using sign language he explains he has to put a Honda Accord on the flatbed - the Mustang will get suspend-towed behind.

It takes about an hour and a quarter to get to San Jose Airport - traffic is heavy, the ac doesn't work, and my nausea is back in spades...

IMG_1670-X4.jpg

Weird colour to order your Carrera in...
hmmm.gif

The driver drops me right by the Rental Car building and I drop him $20 - he's worked hard...
thumb2.gif

I go to the Avis counter and begin to explain - the chap cuts me short and directs me to the fourth floor where they deal with 'swaps'. I have a sinking feeling that I am about to enter a world of bureaucracy, but David, the chap behind the desk asks my surname and says, "Mustang?" I said "Yes - but I don't mind what I get in exchange". "That's not the attitude Mr Oughton - your car is in slot D44". He points out a grey Mustang Convertible.

Amazingly, that's it. I'm out on the road within five minutes of entering the building.

I retrace the route we took coming up here, though thankfully the traffic is lighter, and arrive at the Hampton Inn, Marina, at about 1745.

Put one on the runway, which put pay to the Argentinians using it as a fast jet base for the remainder of the war. Something the RN was grateful for.

Sorry Mike, I forgot about the one that did hit the target!

Well hopefully Mike should be over the Atlantic about now and hopefully not too squashed up…..

1st July 2024

I sleep really well, waking at just after 0700. My flight is scheduled for 1615, and SFO is a couple of hours north of here, depending on traffic. I ablute and then carefully rearrange the packing in my two bags, making sure that everything is where it should be, then roll the cases out to the car. I've just realised I haven't a picture of the replacement car...
fpalm.gif

I'm on the road at 0900, heading North on a variety of roads, including the Pacific Coast Highway - although it doesn't hug the coast at this point...

I pass several cafés on the trip, but don't stop for breakfast, but just drink from my bottle of iced water I filled at the hotel. I have no idea why it doesn't occur to me to stop - I'm not hungry...

Eventually, about two miles from the airport, I pull into a gas station to fill up (rental cars are rented and delivered with a full tank)., I then follow the "Returning Rental Cars" signs, which seems to take me at least twice around the airport, before directing me to the AVIS garage, where a team ask me if there are any snags with the car, carefully check it for damage and personal possessions, ask me to leave the keys in the cupholder and point me to the elevator. Once again, a really slick operation.

I wheel my luggage over to the train to the International Terminal, and soon I'm queuing at the BA desk. I'm checked in quite quickly, and I ask if I can get an aisle seat. No - the plane's full....
bluduh.gif

I sit and people-watch in the terminal for a bit, then make my way to TSA for security checks - it was remarkably quick and, in no time, I'm 'airside' and refilling my water bottle from a fountain just the other side.

It is at this time I realise I have packed my noise-cancelling headset in my checked bag...
fpalm.gif

Fuck it - I go into one of the shops and spend $105 on a Sony replacement...

I take a mosey down to Gate A11, still the best part of an hour away from boarding, and waste time doing some puzzles. I'm in the last group to be called forward to board, and am about the last one in the queue. As soon as I get through the A380's door and show my boarding pass, I'm whisked away and upgraded to Club
clap.gif

Brilliant - I stow my carry-on stuff, get comfortable and then give my dinner order to David, the flight attendant - only then realising it'll be the first thing I have eaten today...
fpalm.gif

IMG_1677-4K.jpg

It's a rough life... :D

IMG_1676-4K.jpg

Although a couple of gin-fizzes make it feel a good deal less so...
lol8.gif

Ian, the A380's captain, pops down to see me somewhere over the Atlantic and tells me my BA benefactor had asked if I could be upgraded if there was room, as I'd had a bit of a fraught last week - he'd sent a pic of the crunched car...
lol8.gif

I don't sleep through the flight, but watch a little video and just relaxed generally - I honestly can't thank my BA benefactor enough - may his shadow never diminish...

We are going to arrive the best part of an hour early! I've bought in-flight SMS, so text Adrian to let him know - he says I may need to have breakfast whilst I wait...

We touch down at 0930 (after 20 minutes in the stack) and I wheel my bag the miles to baggage reclaim. By the time I get there, no bags are on the carousel and a throng of people are waiting. Suddenly, a single case arrives - it's mine! I quickly grab it and head for the exit.

Adrian arrives in 20 minutes or so, and we cram my luggage into his car and start making our way towards Norfolk.

I'm still feeling a bit spaced out, and try to keep up with conversation. We stop for an overpriced (but excellent) Five Guys burger at Mildenhall, then get back home. My fence has been painted and my driveway and yard have been pressure washed and re-sanded - Vikki, my housekeeper, has been in and fitted new bedding and aired the house for me - it's all great.

I text Vikki to see when I can pick Harry up (she's been kennelling him for me) - "Anytime". I'm over in five minutes, to get an effusive welcome home from Harry. Once the zoomies have subsided, I drive him home, and he spends several minutes inspecting the fences and brick weave - it must all smell new to him.

It's always good to get home...

Hello big ears.

If you travel BA again , join the Exec Club for nuffink and you can text free of charge

Great Stuff Mike as always. I love that area of Nevada and Utah, it never gets boring. I was on a Gov't Mule run once driving from SF to LA for the next gig, stopped at a Traffic Light just south of Monterey, near Pebble Beach, looked at the road across the way, Malpaso Drive or some such, had a little click in my head, so that is where Clint Eastwood got the name for his production company from, watching those Dirty Harry films in the Plaza Cinema in Dorchester all those years ago, and there I am in Eastwood territory.
