ESA setting with empty luggage

Yes, and you can cook the Popcorn in the alloy panniers on an open fire.:thumb

However, i tried cooking them in my Vario's once, but they melted... :blast

why would you want to keep the panniers on the bike if their empty ?
topbox yes but panniers:nenau

I don't have any space in the garage to keep them without getting them knocked or scratched, but if find I use them most of the time for carrying work stuff like shoes, laptop, lunch, lidsafe, tyre weld, disk lock.

When not at work I have took them off and been out and thought I could have gone to the shop and picked some stuff up. So just leave them on all the time now.

2000DXP I'm surprised that you can't feel the difference between comfort, normal and sport modes.

When I first got my bike I thought that comfort was too wallowy and didn't use it. Now with more experience I find that comfort setting is very good in the wet when you have to ride extra smoothly. I also dial in comfort on long stretches of motorway.

Normal is as it says for normal riding and sport stiffens the suspension up when you want to enjoy a scratch. All these settings without having to stop. Brilliant in my opinion.

Play with it because it costs lots to have on the bike and it's a waste if you don't use it.

Hi smug, hope you are well.

Sometimes, depending on the road I adjust the damping and can feel the bike handling better, it was more about the preload settings I was interested in working with.

Dave

I'm 80kg and 5' 10" and my missus weighs 55kg and I set the ESA on my GS as follows. I always have all three Vario panniers on with only the top expanded.

Solo = solo
Solo with panniers loaded = solo + luggage
SWMBO on board, panniers empty or loaded = 2 up plus luggage.

Comfort, normal or sport to suit the road conditions.

In my view the OP's question was fine but this thread seems to be full of smart arse wank..s who just want to show how clever, or not, they are.

Why do I keep my panniers on all the time? cos it's my bike and I want to!!!
Anyway the side box stores my helmet when I stop and the rest is for shopping.

Why is the top box expanded? because of the back rest for the missus, other wise she gets on and I've forgotten to expand the box and we have to start all over again.

When I first thought about moving from my RT to a GS I read and read this forum and picked up tons of good advice. It will be a great shame if that situation changes because of the now it all smart arsed posters who now seem to dominate.

You're way too sensitive

You should have been here 5+ years ago, a thread like this wouldn't have lasted 5 mins

This place is really 'dumbed down ' nowadays

So get a grip and lighten up, either the OP had seen the funny side of this thread :-0

Remember that this is a GS and not a billion dollar super tuned racing machine.

That's not what the salesman told me when I bought my GS! Tell me it is not true:mad:

I thought ESA was the direct hotline to the European Space Agency and I was only to push that button if I need help if my tractor was having problem with the warp drive. :blast

I'd have thought that if only weighing 70kg, a decent meal would add sufficient weight to make a difference to the suspension settings. Stick to light meals and leave it on the basic setting.

I think the panniers weigh about 4kg combined, I suspect the difference between the heaviest and lightest tosser here is about 20 times that - perhaps we could have a poll on tosser weights?

So if putting panniers one with the suspension set wrong may break the bike, so would every tosser that is not within 4kg of what BMW deemed to be the average GS riders weight - which is probably 90% of us.

Anyway I really don't understand why you need someone to tell ya, try the settings and see for yourself :thumb2

You mentioned people "buggering up" suspension settings, well firtsly they are complete fools if they are unable to write down the setting before they start buggering, doing this allows you to put it back if you get it wrong - and in my experience you only really learn how to get suspension right by setting it wrong.

We are of course forgetting with ESA you only have to press a button to put it back, so even those who cannot read or write can experiment :D

You also mentioned racers going on about minute adustments, well they are also trying to fine tune to find an extra 1/10th on a 90 second lap - or a factor of 0.1%, they operate in this region, we don't (unfortunately)

I can notice a click or two on my Wilbers from its 30 odd clicks per adjuster, with ESA you get 3 settings, so it is more like 5 or 6 clicks on a Wilburs / Ohlins etc. the difference between each setting is not difficult to notice....

So by pressing buttons you should feel a difference, and stick with what feels good for you, the fact there are only 3 adjustments makes it pretty easy, I have about 27,000 combinations with the 3 damping adjusters with 30 clicks each on my Wilburs, plus the pre-load settings and front settings (damping and pre-load) which probably equates to several million - you only need to ride up and down the road using three.

Also depending how you ride what you like may not be what someone else likes, so much is really down to feel, I could get Rossi to set my bike up and find I hate it, if your not comfortable you will not ride your best, so play with the buttons and find what you like - the real benefit of ESA is you can change it in an instant.

It is made for people who would not otherwise fiddle, so take advantage!
