Final Drive Failure Register

The japs can get it right on the tenere. Why can't BMW on a more expensive product .

 so the Tenere has sold in large numbers for a number of years ? What evidence are you basing that comment on ?

It's been out for a few years now and I've never heard of a single fd failure .

And I don't think we will !!

Where do people get this idea that only GS's tour and do high mileage? When I'm in Europe I see just as many Japanese bikes as BMW. And as far as "fair weather riders" go, look at the mileages of second had GS's. Plenty of low mileage example.

.

I would say that most GS's do more than double the mileage of most jap bikes, take this site for instance. Last 8 or so non BMW bikes for sale above 750cc and more than 5years old. average miles about 18k average age 12years. GS's for sale last 8 again average miles 51k average age 9years,do the same with private sales in MCN and the ratio stays about the same:nenau...............................I'm bored today got a lot of time on my hands:blast go to any biker meet up on a weekend and you'll see loads of big jap bikes zzr's blackbirds,fj's etc with stupid low miles on. they do make great second hand buys mind:thumb very few with huge mileages, yet loads of GS's with 80+ k on them . Obviously I know the GS does outsell most of it's rivals by about 5-1 so I guess you would see more:rob

and because of that ratio there will be a higher percentage of failures , if there was as many of the other brands out there , thier reputations wouldnt look so rosy:P

The 51k Nick Saunders clocked up in twelve weeks is a good start, this was on one of the first bikes of the production line.

The first GS1200's would barely get off the dealers forecourt without an EWS ring going, or to the first 600 mile service without the FD exploding.

The Yamaha FD has also been used on the V-Max, and although neither bike sells in huge numbers I have not heard of a failure yet, I have also seen some bloody high mileage Jap bikes including a number of shaft driven Yamaha's such as XJ900's which would sail past 100k on a final drive.

To say you should expect a shaft to fail as often as a chain is ridiculous anywhere outside of the fairytale world of BMW Land, as is budgeting for bits you know will break early - well if you know they will break so early so does the manufacturer - who should f***** well do something about it - and buying extended warranties or trading in every two years is another BMW World special - people used to Jap bikes are used to selling them when they fancy it and not on a schedule based upon inevitable failures :blast

mr cooper you have won a fecked f/d
good job i am me
:D

The lip in the casting that the outer bearing sit against has cracked. The bike has done 60k and is on its 3rd wheel bearing. Good job I have kept the BMW extended warranty going.

I've just put a deposit down on a 2006 13thousand mile GS, how long are BMW standing by warranty for? will this only be a deal for the original owner?
Thanks

If your buying from BMW dealer you should get 12 months then it's about £320 a year for extended warranty. If its non BMW dealer .......... Best of luck, better arrange an extended warranty ASAP!

Zzzzzzzzz!!

A 2006 bike is 7 years old even if it's got summer holiday only mileage there is no warranty. Alternatively buy from BMW and pay at least another £1000. That might save the worry of failed parts but even a blown final drive is less costs than that.

By the way the internal pinion bearing was changed from 2008 and is much more reliable. I avoided anything older than 08 for just that reason.

Is that a retro fit on to older bikes? 2006 was my limit financially
