Well, picked up my brand spanker 1200 GSA from Southport Superbikes on Wednesday morning with sunny sky's although a bit nippy !!!

Roy and the team had prepped the bike and I had 20 minutes to go through all the pre flight checks, bells, whistles and god knows what before pushing the bike out of the garage ready for take off. First impressions where “Christ its huge” the bike seems to have grown since I ordered it a couple of weeks ago but hey I'm not small myself!.

So, swung my leg over, both feet on the ground (more or less) and press the starter. I first felt the famous side to side motion of the pistons but this goes away on tick over, finding first was pretty painless with the box nice n smooth, I was expecting it to be a bit agricultural going on the stories I had heard but non of it.

With the bike starting to roll, the size really does seem to disappear so I headed out of Southport on my way to North Wales, no plans just keep going (I have the first service booked for Friday morning so I had 1.5 days to get the miles in).

“A” road riding is fine, the roads are wet and the big GS seems to get you into a rhythm of just cruising around, its only when you look at your speed that you realize that the bike really flatters your riding and covers ground quicker than you think. I gave no thought to the shaft drive, flat twin, or bulk of the bike, it just got into it which was a real surprise considering my diet of sports bikes.

After 20 minutes of A roads with the only issue being the indicator switches (there is a knack !!) it was time to get onto the motorway, down the slipway, and upto 70mph ish and no blast, buffeting, and nice n cosy! Heated grips on and yes they were very warm on “2” and away we go. 40 minutes on the motorways then time to turn off for Wales.

I messed around with the ESC settings whilst on the move and normal to comfort on the motorway but didn't notice a huge difference, although it was comfy, so perhaps its better than I thought. !!

Getting onto the twisty stuff heading for horseshoe pass, it was time to go to sport mode, now this does make a change! The bike feels tighter with very little wallowing, I don't believe that the GS is the best handling bike but for the sheer size and versatility it is amazing, throw into the mix the bikes ability to cope with crappy, slimy, lumpy and potholed roads and this is where it comes to the fore, no bike I have owned previously would have been safer or more “progressive” in the conditions, I didn't get the vague front end feeling and the rear just felt planted even with 2 full BMW boxes on the back, (I did have the ESC set to one rider with handbag!)

I stopped off at the Ponderosa on the Horseshoe Pass for a quick brew and bumped into another GSUKer, I had only been on the bike for an hour or so !!!. After a chat and route advice LOL it was time to go again with plans to head to Bala and perhaps call it a day, off I rolled and hit a huge bank of fog as I came into the valleys, on with the fogs, not sure how well they did but they do look cool !! and kept on going arrived in Bala then thought oh well as I here I might as well keep rolling , this attitude found me in Barmouth !!

Its 5.30am as I type this and it looks dry outside so time to pack the bike and head off again, 300 miles today then the bikes ready for its first service !!

Roads today were a mixture of wet, wet or muddy but it didn't seem to make a difference, the bike just handled it. Got over to see Les to pick up some HID's so they will be going on next week (sometime ???) but got 450 miles under the wheels so all on track for the first service in the morning.

To sum up, the bike is great and does its job brilliantly, I cant wait for dryer roads and hot weather !!!:D

Pics added into the post for you there Lardyboy. :thumb2 (Use the img code instead of the url)

That was a good report of your first impressions of the GSA. It only gets better as you get used to the GS. :)

Had its first service today and added a top box - convinced I didn't need one but then took the side boxes off as they were not needed then realised I had no where to put my rubbish !! - Les also tipped me off about the bigger hand guards so they went on and no need for the heated grips this afternon - Nice one Les

Heading down to Weymouth from Cheshire on Sunday so really looking forward to more fantastic weather !!!

I take it you haven't seen the forecast?:augie

Sunday leg of the maiden trip !!

Well, As mentioned previously, I travelled down from Cheshire to Weymouth following the A49 down to Hereford way then cut across towards Monmouth and Tintern then over the Severn Bridge (bit windy !!)

The weather all the way down was fantastic with bright blue skys, dry roads (the first I had been on) and not much traffic.

With the first service out of the way, I could give it a bit more and the bike covers ground pretty fast, certainy fast enough for me with about 1/2 ton of crap in the bags.

All went well until............................

I got rear ended on a roundabout by some chav in a black saxo !!!

First I knew of it ws a push from the right hand side of the bike then the bike pitching over to the left with my foot underneath it. I remember having thoughts of this is gonna slide and I was looking for the inevitable curb, lamp post or whatever was gonna get me then I must have decided to throttle it, ( I didn't even go for the brakes!), subconciously, I must have thought if its leant over, give it some gas and ride it, the only problem now was that I was doing about 30 cranked over going the wrong way around the 3 lane roundabout !!

I finally came to a stop and got off the bike to find not even a mark on the bike, no bent frame on the bike or the rack, nada !

At first I thought I had imagined it but then the Chav mobil stopped and I nearly pissed myself laughin, :D

His nearside headlight was smashed and He had a nice split running down the top of the nearside wing which was also dented in !

I spoke to the guy (sorry I didn't see you!!) and he had shot onto the roundabout and flung it round to be confronted by me. He hit the brakes and his car dipped and went under the right hand side pannier, lifting my bike, and me and flipping me to the left.

With this new found sense of invincibility I stopped to have a smoke and a giggle.

The rest of the journey to Weymouth was pretty uneventful after this and the crossing this morning likewise. The fun started again when I arrived in Guernsey to 5 inches of snow, block roads and total chaos !!

Oh and by the way - Conti Trail attacks are a fine tyre but they are crap in snow ! and work out how to turn your abs off before hitting the white stuff !!:blast

All in all a great 4 days riding in rubbish weather and covering 800 miles. I honestly cant think of a better bike to have done it on (I can think of a few cars though considering the weather)

PS big thanks to the three forum lurkers I met on my travels, there was even one on the ferry to Guernsey this morning !! - Each one was helpful, informative, and friendly (why do people change when they post on forums - only jokin honest)

Jaaaayyyyyzusss, you lucky B***ard! Wow ,I couldn't believe what I was reading, thank the gods you made it ok! Fair play ,enjoyed your post.I got my GSA last Sept , have put feck all km's on it but really enjoying it. Good luck and enjoy yours!

I was a little suprised by the sudden increase in speed and the back end coming round ! - I thought I had left all that behind when I got rid of the R1 last year, still for that extra surge in acceleration just get a numpty to ram a Saxo up your arse !!.

Couple of days before the prang I had been watchin Madagascar with the kids and the airplane part with the penguins crash landing sprang into my head as I went sideways towards the black stuff, fortunatly I dont have the reactions anymore to bale in time and considering the cost of the bike I suppose I thought I aint goin down without a fight !! - More importantly, can you imagine the p**s takin from this lot if I had been knocked off by a chav in a Saxo.

Just waiting for someone to come on now and tell me that it would never have happened if I was on an 1150 :-)

It would never have happened if you were on an 1100 :augie

Really glad you got away with your near miss - think you used up some good luck there :eek

Enjoy the bike - I love my GS even though it's just an old one (betcha can't guess what I've got) :thumb2

GS's crash pretty well don't they?:)

I trust you swapped details with said Chav just in case you find any less obvious damage later?

Phew! Good dit.
Just as a matter of interest, why did you go to Southport rather than CW in Dorchester? Was it just a price thing?

Great report, thanks for sharing ! :thumb2
Think I still know what you feel, the first few days on your Majestic.
Try to get used to the feeling, since it doesn't really ever go away.
Have mine since almost a year now and it only gets better. :D

There you go lads, Timolgra being referred to as helpful, informative and friendly...and in the 1200 section of all places, I must be slipping:eek:

Good to meet you mate:thumb

Guess panniers save lives eh Lardyboy!!?? They seem to provide crumple zones, and now, accident avoidance by elevation :D Well done, glad nothing serious came of it.

I'm new to the GSA too, and LOVING IT!!! :thumb

I have family up in the area anyway so it just happened to be the nearest dealer as Chester Motorad was closed on the Monday I was looking around.

When I did go to SSB I found all the guys really helpful, they had the bike I wanted in stock and they looked after me.

I also had the first service done there and will probably return when the next service is due.

The dealer relationship is important to me when buying a bike, and to be honest, if my normal local dealer sold BMW then I would have bought from them !
