I dont know if its just me,but I got the top & bottom bars & fitted both sets in an hour and a half. The instructions were in german but you only had to look at the bike & it was all self explanatory!
I see you have a R1100GS.
I would agree - well apart from the flaming rear mount on the RHS. For me the brake pipe misses the H&B bars by less than 1mm. The H&B diagram actually advocates putting the right angle bracket between the frame and the brake pipe. I was not able to do this. H&B actually told me to bend the pipe ! whereas it is possible to put on the left of the brake pipe. From what I have seen the position of the brake pipe relative to the frame varies on the R1100GS. Did you have any hassles ?
BTW BHT tells me and Motobins confirmed that the top bars have to come off if you wish to change the headlight bulb.
BTW2 : did you know that the engine front cover is now trapped (R1100GS only - I think) you cannot remove it unless you whip off the LHS bars) -pain

H&B bars

No probs at all with the brake pipe, the bracket is quite close but not enough to do any kind of damage.I realise that to do practically anything to the bike I will have to remove the bars, but IMHO it is worth it for the protection they offer, and apart from that any excuse to get into the garage is a good thing!!!

H&B bars

Christ, that is close! My pipe runs close but outside of the bracket, about 4mm.

Widetail

By the way Malky, forgot to mention on my last reply how cool I think your Widetail idea is.Can u PM me with cost for two sets, one for my bike, and one for my wifes 650GS

Cheers

Tony

Simon,

Many thanks for taking the time to put together the instructions. They were excellent, first accessory successfully fitted to my new GS.

Wobbler, does that mean you have unsuccessfully fitted a load of other stuff or........ is this the start of the spending

Sticky Rubber etc

Dave,
It's just the start! I haven't even had time to run it in yet.
I need to sort out an alarm next, The wife is a deterent but she's not always with me.
Any thoughts, prefences or discounts on alarms.

Sorry mate, never had a bike alarm, i keep it garaged and used a big eff off lock when i'm out and about. A big no no is to wash your bike on a sunday afternoon after you return from a ride. Loads of bike thieves cruise round on Sundays looking out for bikes being washed, its easier than following someone home, they then return (not necessarily on that night) and hey presto, you get intimate with your insurance company and the thieving scum get a few quid for a stripped down pile of bits. You have been warned.

H&B engine bars

WARNING - do not on any account remove ALL the engine bolts before attempting to fit the H&B bars. I will leave it to your imagination what happens next.........but a hydraulic jack came in mighty handy! DOH...................................!

You didn't read either my instructions (in bold at the start) or the manufacturer's. Did you? Eh? Eh?

Quote:

"the manufacturers clearly post the following warning:

Do not loosen the right hand side and left hand side rear attachments at the same time, otherwise there is a danger of the rear subframe dropping.

So, fit one side of the bike at a time!"

H&B engine guards for 2 spark 1150gs

Does it make a difference for maintenance or installation when installing the 1150gs H&B engine guards on a new gs with two sparkplugs per cylinder ?

Thanks.

Just fitted mine HBs following Simons instructions and went OK except:_
LHS 'bolt that went thru the footpeg ..flew in until about 2-3mm from end then just stopped tight. Checked and rechecked but was aligned..So put an extra washer in and that did the trick.
Suspect that there was not enough thread on the M10 bolt though didnt check it against the others cause this was the last one.

How much wider does the H&B bars make the engine as I have very little space between me and the ole gate posts!

Approx 1.5 inches each side the bars are 32.5 inches overall. Still narrower than the handle bars. I have the same problem with a narrow gate.

Mo-Tech engine crash bars

Has anyone used the mo-tech engine crash bars? If so, how do you like them? Do you have any pictures you could share?

H&B Bars

Simon used your instructions for fitting the bars and had no problems. Thank you. The job took a bit longer because I was paranoid about the rear bolts and getting them aligned.

I had fitted the bars and was putting the rear seat back on when I slipped and inadvertently pushed the bike off it's centre stand. Hey, you know what? The crash bars work!!:p

Simon ditto took about 2 hours with no help what a sad bloke I am no mates, Tank was FULL of petrol which did make it a bit of a pain plus I dislodged a throtle cable which was interesting when I started her up but logged onto the bb and sorted it in less than 10 mins. So thanks very greatfull.

Thanks

Fitted mine on the R1100GS last night and took about 35 minutes for the whole job doing one side at a time. Re-torqued the bolts stood back and hell the bike looks even wider now!

Thanks for the instructions although the 1100 bars do have an additional l-plate but no-brainer to fit once you looked at the stuff for a while.

Cheers

How much wider ?

I'm interested in fitting some of these - a few questions:

1) How much are they ?
2) Which colours are available
3) Crucially (given my width restricted shed) how much width do they add to the cylinder heads

cheers
