Fuel cap pin replacement.

So the fuel cap on my GSA, well the ring, had some surface corrosion. It bugs me so I bought another used fuel cap (from an 1150) and replaced it.
All good, you can replace the barrel easily. I would not say how long it took me to figure out how to "reset" the spring that brings back the key in its vertical position :D

Anyway, question is this:

The 1200 fuel cap has a little spring that dampens the opening/closing movement of the cap.
The 1150 cap doesn't.

I'll probably forget fairly quickly about said spring, but yesterday I tried to remove the pin that keeps the cap attached to the outer ring to no avail.
Is there some method? Just brute force?

Spring mechanism:
 
if memory serves me correctly, you have to remove that red nipple as well to access what i think you speak of. It took me three attempts and many bitter words to do mine after breaking my lid off in Germany last year. Again...the 1150 is a straight swap, the 1200 not so. If memory serves me..
 
Nono, I replaced successfully the barrel and reinstalled the new fuel cap on the bike. You just undo the three screws and it comes out. Just keep the key inside the barrel if you don't want all the metal spacers to fall out. Don't ask how I know. :)
You can see in the video one of the two caps disassembled.

What I wanted to do was to detach the actual fuel cap from the outer metal ring, so I can move over that little spring.
I don't understand how to remove the pin that secures it (and lets the cap pivot) to the outer ring.
 
Pin does come out, - if you fit a tank bag, you need to put a different pin in to help the opening mech

I just have to figure out how. I tried pushing/tapping it from the side, but doesn't budge.
 
Turn it on it's side and drown the pin & body with coke (drink) and leave overnight, wash off and see if the pin has freed
 
Looks like it needs punching out? Carefully of course!

I was busy meeting Mr. Slipperyeel today, as he kindly re-tightened the spokes and re-straightened on one of my set of wheels for my GSA :)
I'll be in the garage tomorrow messing with those (bearings + new pressure sensors), I'll give the fuel cap the coke (Cola :) ) treatment.

Today I just managed to do an engine oil + filter change (10/40 --> 15/50).

if you going to coke it, remove it from the tank

Coke and fuel systems are not a good marriage

Reviving this post to share a tip in the FWIW department re the fuel cap. One of the best mods I ever did was to change the fuel cap assembly to allow the whole cap to be removed from the tank for filling it (2012 R1200GS - K25). Here in California our pumps have this vapor retaining sleeve on the pump (we call it a ‘condom’) which works fine for cars, but needs to be manually retracted to fill a m/c tank completely, or the pump shuts off before you have a full tank. So this tank cap mod is really helpful because it makes it easier to pull the dang thing back by hand. Might be of interest to those of you wrestling with tanks bags, too.

Reason for searching around here was I was looking for clues as to where the tiny spring came from that I found sitting under the fuel cap in the little trough surrounding the filler hole on my last fill up. Looks to me like the sort of spring you’d find inside a look barrel. Haven’t pulled the tank cap apart yet, but I’m having hard time believing that after 10-15 years since I did the above mod this little spring found its way out of the lock. Key still turns and springs back, so don’t know if it’s going to be an issue. And I lost the spring anyway. Glad it didn’t end up in the petrol tank - lord knows what sort of pain that might’ve caused.

It's just a torsion spring. What you need is: the wire diameter, the number of turns, the internal bit of the spring winding (so it will go over your pin) and the angle between the end of the spring - I'd hazard a guess at 180° for this spring.
