Are there any significant differences between these or should I just go for the vanilla 'quest'?

thanks

sam

That looks like it's comparing the American spec units. UK spec Quests have 243Mb memory.

From what I've seen the Quest 2 can use the POI Loader. Now that seems fine if you want to put in 30mph limits etc... but since you can download a speed camera overlay (see sticky at the top of the GPS forum), then that seems a bit of a waste, if you've got an original Quest or can buy one cheaper than a Quest 2.

:)

Thanks seems like the quest 2 is a lot more money. I may just consider the i3 - as it has a POI Loader and a proximity alert. Although the quest has the former in a roundabout way it does not appear to have the latter - although I will happily be corrected.

Not weatherproof!

StreetPilot i-series and c300-series are IPX0 which means no weather protection at all.
They are for car use only.

Most units that do have proximity alarms have it for 10 positions only.
The only one that I know is better is the 276C. It did get 100 alarms in some of it's never firmware releases.

POI-loader is probably the way to go with speed camera alerting.

The only thing I am hesitating about is the fact that it would be nice to be alerted when approaching a speed camera - however I am not sure whether simply having the overlay is sufficient or not. Does anyone have any comments about this?

Hopefully this weekend I will get a chance to play with the i3.

As the unit will probably start in my tank bag not too worried about the weatherproofness.

I use the overlay and it works as advertised. You can set POI's to small/medium/large size so with the Quest 'range' set to 0.2 miles you see them coming on the screen before you see them on the road. I don't use the audio on my Quest whilst I'm riding so this is ideal for me. There's also the argument about being observant too ;)

I don't keep my Quest in a tankbag as I find it useful to change the 'range' on the screen, and it's fitted to a powered Garmin mount so I don't have any concerns on battery charge. Also, mine is mounted so it's within my normal field of vision when looking at the clocks.

I very rarely find the time to keep my eyes at the map as much as I'd imagine necessary. I'm quite busy looking at the road and traffic. Even though I have a 276C with a much larger screen I don't use the moving map that much. It's the pop-up directions and warnings I find most useful.

I believe that things would be much worse with a i3 (screen is even smaller than Quest) mounted very far (like in a tankbag) from where I usually look. I think it's bad enough constantly moving the eyes and refocusing, but also move my head up and down would drive me crazy.

If you don't really want a GPS, why not buy a dedicated speed camera warning unit? I'm sure I've seen one for motorcycle use somewhere.

Another alternative that I also imagine is much better than the i3 would be a PDA with a cheap GPS. There's speed warning software available. A PDA is usually not wetherprotected either but there are special made protection boxes (Otterbox for instance) that can be mounted close to field of sight.

cheers gents - I guess I want my cake and want to eat it. The quest 2 obviously does everything but my primary want is for a GPS device the speed camera list is a very nice to have.

You are right the database cannot be fully up to date and it will not account for mobile units - so will have to be observant.

Thanks I think I will stick with the Quest

UK Units Also 115Mb Map Storage??

Maybe I'm wrong? but some people seem to think UK & USA Quests have different memory capacity?? - as in Twotter's post above, but both my UK supplied Quests, which came pre-loaded by Garmin with UK street level mapping, ONLY have a usable map storage memory of 115Mb - I think this 243Mb memory thing is the TOTAL memory size of the unit and is irelevent to what we're talking about here - map storage?. It looks like Quest 2 can store 140Mb of maps - an increase of only about 20%??.
Is what I'm thinking correct - or is it me thats mixed up??

Cheers.......................Grizzly

I'm quite certain the memory capacities are different for UK vs US spec Quests. At the moment I've got 150 odd Mb of maps loaded on my UK spec Quest.

Now if Quest 2 was in a black case and they were something like £50 to upgrade in a part-ex deal, then I'd be interested.

I am going to sound a bit thick but do the UK quests have 243mb of memory and if so how do I check that?

cheers

Well i own the UK spec Quest and mine certainly has 243mb of useable memory for map data.

The storage space is most definately larger than the US version which i believe only has 115mb although i couldn't swear to that. Not sure whether the previous post referring to both UK & US spec has actually got two US spec or not, but i can say 100% that my UK spec one has 243mb, even says so in the manual
