Hello, I am new to these bikes having got a 2010 R1200GS recently. Loving it so far but I have a question for other owners. The gearbox does not clunk into 1st when hot or cold in fact there is no feeling at all, on my foot, when changing between any gear. Also the gear lever doesn't stop moving down when it gets to first. Is this normal? It changes gear very smoothly, I only ask because it is very different from all the Japanese bike I have owned in the past. Thanks.

I think you mean when playing with gears... the lever still has the ability to move as if to select another gear, but as its already at the end why doesn't it dead end - this is the way honda did it - its much better - you can move the lever and know its the end - rather than the old rubbish method the earlier tractors had, where it feels like there must be another gear, so you try to find it only to discover there wasn't and you have wasted your time trying (its usually going up to top gear on a honda, can't remember if they do this going down the box) - its just the way the selector mechanism is set up (old rubbish vs improved)

as for the other comment about a dry clutch making it quiet selecting first - I own two, an old one and the later one - and they both make an almighty massive clunk of hell selecting first at rest....

Thanks for the replies, feel a bit silly for not thinking of the dry clutch!!! Turkuss, I know what you mean about getting used it, every time I go out the GS makes more sense. Also botus is exactly right about about the gearbox not dead ending in first, nice to know this is normal. Thanks again.

All bmw gearboxes prior to the wc,are a 3 shaft constant mesh with dog gears.
More like a 1970 car gearbox (without the refinement of synchromesh engagement)
A jap box is two shaft,
End result,is a lot more backlash, more shunt on the gear shafts.and an agricultural box.
Fixing the broken ones keeps me out of trouble.:-)

2011 GS - warm it up while i put helmet on and pump clutch a couple of times then it drops in to first as quiet as a church mouse
From second upwards simply accelerate by riding the torque curve and the lightest of one finger on the clutch makes the shift smoother than any BM auto car ive ever driven.

Start and ride - they get more crashbox the warmer they get :)

Clutch for upshifts? What's that?? ;) ;)

Accelerate, close throttle, fully prod lever, open throttle,

Still need the clutch to get the crashbox down from 6th :D:D
