Got Shaft Rot.... again WTF

So they charge extortionate prices for their spares which must have a fantastic markup, items that fail before they should and offer extended warranties because people are afraid of the cost of said parts prices.

All in all a nice business model for BMW and no doubt others.

Sounds about right Mrtee

Ooh get you with your local knowledge :thumb

That is a 3 minute ride for me...... I shall probably ride around the island when the sun sets and the traffic lightens.

I'm probably being paranoid but I had a good old feel of my final drive after a few mile ride today and it was pretty hot. Not too hot to touch but hot. As I have never done this before (groped my final drive)..... Is this okay or have my dealership screwed it up???

Let,s hope they did not forget the oil.............:yikes local knowledge spent 2 seasons working as a lifeguard at Le havre du pas swimming pool, was in 1980..;)

Nothing would surprise me which Is why I asked to speak to the tech when I collected it to confirm it would need the oil changing at 600 miles. I hoped that would be a big enough hint.............. Have Des Pas pool is still going strong :beerjug:

:beerjug: Surely someone will be along soon regarding the heat, must admit never put my hand on mine after riding.......might do tomorrow.

I thought I would hold off any updates on my 2017 GS Rallye Sport until it was all sorted. It only took 5 weeks.........

To cut a very, very long story short I collected my bike this morning with a new drive shaft and new final drive. Same issue as Warlord had originally but my dealer kept trying to charge me for it.
At over £3K in repairs that was never going to happen. My bike was 26 months old 11,500 miles, I bought it new from them and I extended the warranty however my dealer took it upon themselves to not bother putting in a claim as they were convinced it was not covered as corrosion is not covered by the extended warranty. I eventually forced them to submit for a 'goodwill gesture' from BMW Motorrad UK. This was accepted and finally I am back on the road.

This was not a joyous experience and has left a bitter taste. Hopefully their technical skills were better than their customer service skills and all will be good.

Good, you got it sorted. :thumb

Let,s hope they did not forget the oil.............:yikes

Now that would be a Royal Fuckup wouldn't it :yikes

Probably not anymore. I love my GS and providing it behaves, it is a keeper. If it does not I will look elsewhere. Too much stress involved dealing with my local BMW service centre.

my 1250 only has 500 miles on it, so i thought it would be a good idea to check the shaft. The tiniest little spot of grease on the tip.
glad I have taken care of it nice and early.

After reading this thread and having a free day checked my 2014 TE and found surface rust on the drive shaft and a small amount of water in the swing arm.
All cleaned and greased. There was evidence of grease on the gaitor but this had dried out was was useless.
Thanks to the early advice the whole process was done and dusted in a afternoon.
When I had the wheel etc all off, got a good chance to clean the swing arm and inspect the paintwork, the paint has cracked, flaked and was in generally in a poor condition. Next project off with the swing arm for a proper job to be done on it.

Interesting question this. On my old 1150 ADV, just a couple of years ago, the FD big bearing failed as I rolled off the train at Calais. I posted the story on here.

So while on the rest of that trip and after I fixed it, you'll understand I was left with a shade of paranoia. So I was often groping my FD to try and see how it was behaving. But having never done it before, I wasn't really sure how to measure it.

In Italy, in the summer, the FD got pretty bloody hot. But you could still touch it. I estimated this meant it was about 40-45°C.

Now with the 1200 that has a hollow shaft in the FD, I anticipated lower temps. And last year, sure enough, it was cooler, but still 'hot'.

So, I would guess, in high ambient temperatures, if you CAN'T touch it, then something is wrong. But if you can but its 'hot', then that's in the normal range

That is pretty much exactly how I would describe the temperature of mine. I am pretty happy after about 80 miles. It is really good to have the bike back after 5 weeks. I will drop the oil in another 500 miles, check the magnet for bits and replenish.

I was referring to being so tedious...........:jes

I would say that the way BMW have designed these shaft drives, being so crap, it's creating more maintenance than a chain driven bike !!

Well.... that's true if you can be bothered to look inside it now and then. I suppose if you're not going to keep the bike more than two years, it's not a problem :D

Personally, I don't mind so much and I'll be opening it up again at 18,000 miles for another inspection. I'll not make it so airtight next time and leave some way for air to get in at the top end of the shaft drive (nearest the gearbox)

Maybe punch a little pinhole in the top, simply because even if it tears they aint that expensive to replace later, and you will not have the accordeon effect.....:rob
