Got Shaft Rot.... again WTF

Maybe punch a little pinhole in the top, simply because even if it tears they aint that expensive to replace later, and you will not have the accordeon effect.....:rob

The one on my old RT was around £60!

It’s not just BMW y’know. I read the same style thread on a FJR 1300 forum and had to lube splines on the two of those bikes I’ve owned.

Metal to metal with a potential for reciprocating motion? Nah, shouldn’t need any lube :blast

That is pretty much exactly how I would describe the temperature of mine. I am pretty happy after about 80 miles. It is really good to have the bike back after 5 weeks. I will drop the oil in another 500 miles, check the magnet for bits and replenish.

Just a little extra, I went out yesterday to do a test in temp at 22 C rode it for about 90 mins distance 125 kms came back home FD was hardly warm, thought cannot be right, so been out this morning temp 21C gave the bike a good thrashing in small roads and on the motorway in Dynamic mode, stopped 3 times to check, same thing hardly luke warm to touch, just got home bike in the garage, still the same, FD is hardly warm, total distance covered today 200 kms.

Ummm.... no we don't.

I bought one bike... that is all.

Bet you buy another. I said I would not after the many issues it had, but after test riding many other bikes - the BMW was the best bike for me.(2 x 1200GS LC TE) I am a crap rider and it makes me feel like a god on two wheels:D

Just wish the engine sounded like an inline 4

Yeah, I'll buy a R1250 Gsa Triple Black eventually....

It's safe for quite a while yet.... I'm not changing, no point :)

Totally agree the more I ride mine the better it feels, what more would I do with a 1250. :nenau:nenau:nenau I aint Barry Sheen and they are talking about dropping speed here to 80 like in France, might end up with a vespa 50

The BMW R-GS/GSA form factor is very good, regardless of engine and farkles attached to it.

The biggest challenge is keeping it maintained to a high standard and then packing in the miles :D

Done all the miles in my younger days, more enjoy the odd day out now, so bike will be safe for a while, as long as it does not self destruct.........:yikes:yikes:yikes

Hmmmm. Mine is hot but sounds and feels great. Maybe friction will be a bit higher on a brand new one that needs bedding in (he says hopefully). Thanks for checking Smogbob.

Neil my bike is 2017 but has only 3500 kms on the clock so hardly a mega mileage bike yet, mine at any stage of the rides just felt like a luke warm coffee at the most heat wise in 20 to 21 C, at no time could I describe the shaft as hot, not even close to hot, if yours is hot, something is not right, just go back to them take a demo bike out for half an hour, then touch the shaft, and compare to yours, that is what I would do personally, do not let them fob you off.

Smogbob
The shaft is not hot, its Luke warm. I'm referring to the 'round' final drive. The bit with the hole through the middle.

Ah OK I thought you ment the shaft, I have a bung in that hole one of them wunderlich things in case of a bike drop, I will remove the bung and have a look in a day or 2

Not in the hole just place your hand over the hub after a ride. Mine was not soooo hot today maybe bedding in???

I shall lick it later Warlord and let you know........

I did that Neil it was just Luke warm also, I actually thought that would be the hottest place given the oil in there, but no difference at all from the Final drive, every single part the hub the shaft everything no more than luke warm, I did it over 2 days and a few times, it never went up in temperature at all, I cannot believe I am the only one on here who has been out on the bike and not felt the need to check just in case.

Maybe they are not master mechanics like us eh :beerjug:

I have not even opened my final drive yet Neil, to scared to see what is inside, but will have a peek in the winter, anyway their must be somebody else on your rock with a GS LC to compare....;)

Just thinking also the shafts come out of the factory with no grease, reason for this is so the metal can cool more quickly, wondering if the mechanic has not bunged a ton of grease on the splines and shaft and this is retaining the heat......:nenau

I'm just back from a little jaunt in the bike. Thought I'd grope the FD and see how it was...

Bearing in mind the ambient temp here in London is approx 27°, I measured the temp from the FD along toward the engine.

FD= 40.3°
Beginning of the swing arm (FD end) = 43.6°
Middle of the swing arm = 46.1°
Gearbox end of the swing arm = 48.5°
Gearbox = 74.8°

So clearly a lot of the heat in the drive train is from the motor .
