It's a credit to the value of what the bike has cost me plus extras fitted, I believe, less an £1,100 contribution from me for the 5,500 miles ridden.

I'm waiting for confirmation in writing as getting anything in writing seems difficult.
.

Sounds as tho it's been resolved to your satisfaction and that's what counts.

They say it’s a marketing fact that a customer whom had a dispute with a business (in this case BMW), and resolve that dispute to their satisfaction is more likely to be a loyal to them than a customer with whom they had no dispute at all.

I tried a XR before I bought my GS but found it very low geared for the power available, it made duel carriageway work tiresome. Apart from that it was good, and fast!

Well I could always put my new GS driving lights on it!

That would look weird....

BMW should be bringing out some led spotlights for the XR this year, with any luck.

Personally I would be more loyal to a brand that had not given me any problems.

Theres no such bike nowadays, we live in a world where manufacturing is done in far away countries with less focus on quality and more mass and now and again something will go wrong but it's not the issue, more how they are resolved that matters.

Which is why I won't buy a KTM for the foreseeable future.;)

Well narrowed it down to a GS or S1000XR.

Much as I like the S, I suspect that it'll be another GS again for the commute and touring.

It's pretty much a like for like deal so no credit balance if I go down the cheaper route which rules out the F800GS..

Chester Motorrad are being very helpful with this now that a decision has been made.

Thanks again for your help on this.

The majority of GS riders are well satisfied with our bikes, I think you were very unlucky and your replacement bike will hopefully be a good un.

I have an S1000R and can tell you if you want to do any touring the GS will be much better. The S will sit on the road ok but do you really want to be listening to that engine on the highway for a long time?

The S1000XR is a better touring bike than the R, and is similar to the GS. It just depends what sort of touring the OP wants to do; motorway or back roads.
