Hi!

My most excellent GSA 1150 came with an annoying fault which only happened the night prior to me buying it, which is that the hazards are permanently on.

I have taken the switch gear apart, cleaned, lubricated and generally done all the normal things to it - no change.

I have replaced the hazard relay - no change.

My questions are these:

Are the hazards supposed to be 'on' when the ignition is off (ie: can they be activated with the key not in) as the hazards continue to function when i take the key out at the moment and only cease when i remove the relay.

My battery is not 'new' but starts the bike every time, but I do have a replacement sitting ready to go tomorrow - could this be a factor?

How does the hazard switch operate - is it activate 12V or deactivate 12V - this will affect whether I cut the wire at the switch to determine if that works.

I intend taking the tank off tomorrow and tracing all the wires back to see if there is a fault - but would welcome any input as I am not an engineer by any stretch of the imagination!

Hi Oo,

Was the relay replaced with new?you can test the relay by putting 12v accross the coil and you will feel/hear it switch if it is working.

You can also get a voltmeter and put it across the terminals in the socket which the relay fits in. You can then determine if the switch is not working or not -when you press it on you will get 12v and when you press it off you should get 0v.

One thing which I guess may be worth checking is the state of the wiring loom by the ignition switch and on the headstock. See in this thread for why http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=214151

Hope this helps.

Hi Tom

Errr... the relay is like a circuit board type one - no clunky noises or anything to make them?

Also the indicators flash - so i am thinking that the relay must be ok

One little point i just remembered - the led on top of the hazard switch is permanently illuminated - is this correct?

I'll certainly check the wiring too.

Thanks so far!

Ah see what you mean. Unfortunately my r/h is not very good at the moment as a result of a steroid injection in my wrist otherwise I would take it apart and work out what you need to test.

According to my Haynes manual the wire from the hazard switch is Yellow with purple stripes and goes to terminal 5 on the relay. The 0v is Brown and is terminal 7 of the relay. If you put your DVM between these you should get a 12 v reading when the switch is on and 0v when the switch is off. Incidentally the switch IS illuminated at all times.

The relay switches through pins 12 (blue with red stripes Left side) and pin 6 (blue Right Side)

Please note I have taken this from my Haynes manual and it has been known for them to be wrong.

Hope this helps.

Oh - and what is the voltage of the battery that is in it? With a Solid State Relay (SSR) it is conceivable that low voltages can cause problems, however I would have expected the relay not to switch (Im making the assumption that the relay is normally open as per the Haynes manual)

going to brave the cold and have a go.

** A little bit later **

no can't figure it out, even cut the wire going to the switch and its still flashing away.

Think I need to get the bike inside - the cold and wind isnt helping.

progress

As an update, my mates got the bike inside and took it to bits (gulp).

Discovered that the micro switch in one of the indicators was buggered (as per several posts on the forum) so we've sent off for a replacement switch.

Updates coming.

What alarm do you have? Mine will flash the inidicators like hazards without touching the bike's hazard hardware if you press the buttons in the right combination.

Update 2:

We took the bike apart in the comfort of the warehouse, carpet on floor, heater on - bliss :)

We traced the fault to a dodgy indicator button, whipped the loom off and discovered about 5 burnt out wires in the loom which I am busily replacing.

Motor Works and James Sherlock have provided the replacement micro switches and hazard button.

Whilst I am it I am soldering up some dodgy wires under the tank too, looks like the famous headstock cable tie gremlin caught this adv some while ago.

Well done - had a problem on mine this weekend in that the spots would not come on and the relay was clicking when it wasn't meant too. Traced it to the previous owner thinking that powder coat is conductive when wiring multiple earth. Turns out it isn't! 5 minutes with emery cloth cleaning terminals and powder coat off and all working again.

Glad you have it all sorted as these problems can be really perplexing but very satisfying when sorted!

It gets worse..

Ok so we had the loom out from the lh switches and discovered that our fears were right - that the loom had had the failure documented.

We found multiple issues, so cut back the sheath, desoldered all the old joins (which by now had corroded badly) and heatshrinked the whole lot up again.

Attached new buttons to indicator and hazard and tested - all working again!!

The only thing we notice is that the new switch requires a more positive action than the original which we hope will wear in after time.

Now I am on a mission to tidy up all the cables for the spotlights loom, and sort out the cats cradle under the seat :)

All in all and very satisfying result - almost entirely down to research off this forum and forum users.

Thanks!

Owen
