HELP!!!!!

I have a 2013 90th Anniversary R1200GS Adventure which has done just over 4000 miles.

Recently the 'SERVICE' light came on and so I figured it must be due a service as it's probably hit the 12 month mark.

I contacted Barnstormer who have advised I need to get 2 services done as per BMW schedule, a 12 month followed by a 6000 once I hit the mileage, costing a touch under £400!!!!

I've looked at various threads and vids as well as the schedule of work, and I'm pretty sure I can manage what needs to be done myself.

My only concern is how would doing the service myself affect the warranty on the bike, should I need it?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated, as I'm off to the Black Forest soon and would like to get things sorted asap.

How can you do 2 services on a bike ?

Surly you just need the higher miles one i.e the 6K

The 12 month service is a ruse by the dealers to get your bike in every 12 months if you haven't hit the mileage mark for service. It's little more than a check over I guess but costly all the same.

As long as you use BMW parts your warranty should be fine doing it yourself with the full knowledge that it's been done properly and nothing's been missed. Sign up to a Mikeyboy service day so you can know exactly what to do. The other way is let a good independent like Steptoe or Mikeyboy do it for you.

I had the same issue a while back with my K1600, today I got the 12K and annual done together, its pricey but it means the book is stamped by the main dealer and thats important if you intend selling any time soon.
My concern is if I do it myself and go down the road and something goes wrong, it gives them the out to say it wasnt serviced properly. Whilst in warranty I will keep to the schedule and just have to accept the BMW price.

I'd rather have it stamped by a good independent. At least you know things have been done right and they have done the bits the dealer just doesn't bother with. However, your average punter thinks dealer history means something special and it affects warranty but the reality is often very different.

I've got an experienced GSer coming over and we're going to tackle both bikes together. I'll keep receipts and follow a printed schedule. Slowly and steadily, I'll hopefully cover everything I need to in order to keep my bike ticking over. I'm hoping that I'll eventually be able to deal with anything that might come my way

I am one to agree with Sgt. Billco get mikeyboy to do service for you as your bike will have never been so clean in its life and so well checked over trust me as have been on one of mikeyboy service days

That is not correct. If the mileage is low the bike requires an "annual" which is fluids. In my case that happened in October at 4,700 miles. The first "annual" also requires brake fluids changed (thereafter every other year). When my bike reached 6,000 miles (a few weeks ago) it came back in for the mileage related work which was basically balance the throttle bodies and check the valve clearances. If the two events occur reasonably close together they can be combined which is convenient and a little cheaper. On an older bike that is way outside warranty I would service purely on mileage, this is what I do with my irreplaceable C1s, my 2013 Triple Black follows the official regime and will soon be placed on extended warranty.

The service light will tell you when either event is due soon.

I can highly reccomend steptoe, in Kingston area of London. He did an excellent job on my 2006 GS, runs super smooth now.

I really want to learn to do my own service work, I do my own oil changes, rear springs, brake pads and discs ect on my cars, but not the bike. With the car I had experienced folk show me and teach me, which was brilliant.

Think i'll start by oil changes, as I've been changing the oil every 4k on my car, as I think good oil service is key. My car is on 180k and still runs sweet.

Fresh oil in the GS and I can really feel the difference, want to start doing them. Have to ask Steptoe what he used, rather than create an oil thread

I need to have my brake discs replaced but the BMW main dealer has quoted me what I believe is a ridiculous price -how does one contact Mikeyboy and is he located anywhere near to Reading?

My Triple Black GSA 2013 is doing fine under Vines tender care (running in service, annual then 6k which is absolutely fine for two years of fuss free ownership). These are 14-16k bikes, I'm not baulking at a few service bills.

Good luck with your service, wherever you end up taking it.

Why is that then???

If you use genuine BMW service parts and approved oil, they can't refuse a future warranty claim, under the 6 year EEC rules

I'm not familiar with the 6 year rule but your contract under the Sale of Goods Act would be with the supplying dealer and not the importer or manufacturer.

Two years warranty, the option to extend and dealer servicing works well for me, I don't want to take chances with my considerable investment.

I'm planning on keeping mine for the foreseeable, and I'm more interested in the work being carried out being done to a high standard as I'm hoping Mikeyboy will provide. I would have happily used BMW dealer, but just got the wrong noises from those I contacted. I hope Vines continue to provide you with an honest service

Wise choice Turkish. Glad to see someone more interested in keeping their bike in tip top mechanical condition rather then worrying about trade in and warranty. Having it done by someone like Mikeyboy means you are less likely to have any issues in my opinion because they are more thorough in their service. Ask Mike about the FD issue he discovered which was missed by all and sundry.
