Hi , looking for clarification on the hill hold function on my recently purchased 2018 1200gs rally.
I thought hill hold was fitted to my bike so decided to ride out & have a play but now matter what I did couldn't get hill hold to engage!.
Had a good look in the tft menu but couldn't find anything relating to hill hold so started thinking may be I don't have the hill hold option fitted .
But recently went on the bmw configurator & found out it is listed in the option's for my bike.
So my question is should there be some thing in the tft menu to turn on / off or set to auto or is it just supposedly work by a quick pull on the front brake lever ?.
Thanks,
Ian.

Hi Ian,
The hill hold if fitted should be activated when you are stationary and pull on and hold the brake lever briefly. A light comes on in the TFT while activated. To release either pull again on the brake lever or just ride off albeit with a few more revs to overcome the braking force. Unsure if the function can be deactivated in the TFT.

Yes a firm, prolonged pull on the handbrake should engage it, the screen should show an “H” in green. If you put the side stand down it’ll go yellow and somehow you can turn it grey (engine off?) - it only holds the bike if it’s green.

I find it really useful

Can't say what is on the TFT configuration for 1200's, but on my 2019 R1250GS, you can switch Hill Hold on/off by choosing Settings / Vehicle Settings / Hill Hold.

Thanks for the speedy replies, I'm shore I did every thing that the hand book said , I will give it another go next time I'm out ,
Thanks,
Ian.

Hi hawkeye , yes your right I have watched a number of 1250 utube video's & that's what made me ask ,
May be the hill hold has been accidentally removed when the dealers been doing a software update !.

If you type your vin number ito one of the various online vin decoders you can see if you have HH option fitted

i thought it was 2 rapid squeezes of the brake lever when stopped engaged the HH function

As I said in my original post it's showing on the bmw configurator for my bike .

A tap on the rear brake when stationary will also activate it.
Odd that it's missing if it's showing on configuration. Sounds like it's for dealer to resolve.

When my 1250 had the update to stop drive shaft failure it lost hill start and needed a ecu update, also not unknown for bmw to mess up options when new, my 2018 model gsa was ordered and specced with computer pro and sat nav prep among other options and the factory forgot to do both despite them being on the build sheet

I'll try that as I only ever actuate it with the front! Ta.

Configurator or actual Vin data ?

You can configure what you like , only if the option is fitted / coded at manufacture or retro fit will you get the option code tied to your Vin

Providing it wasn't a old stock if it's a TE it should have HH as standard? my 67 plate 2018 one certainly did have it as standard.

Hill Start Control (HSC) has 3 available settings, which can be changed in, er, settings:
  • Auto - a light pull on the lever will activate (green H logo on the dash)
  • Manual - requires a much heavier pull on the lever to activate
  • Off
I believe HSC only works when the IMU detects a slope, I could be wrong but I recall something like 3 degrees plus or minus. My driveway is on a 15 degree slope so Auto mode is a PITA, hence I leave it on manual permanently. The original 1200 was very jerky at releasing but my ‘23 plate GS is super smooth, just a bit of throttle and it turns off.
When you go to settings, vehicle settings, HSC, what do you see?

Up date , managed to get on to the configuration site thingy & my bike comes up showing x0204 hill start control, so am I right in thinking it has hill start control fitted & as I still can't get it to work or show any thing on the TFT I probably need to contact my dealer who sold me the bike ,
Thanks,
Ian.

Check your settings in the tft menu. It’s probably been turned off.

17/18 ish Hillstart was introduced as standard. However if your bike was just prior to that it could be configured by the dealer at a cost.

I think it's about £240 with the vat, I was going to have it done, but broke down on the way to have it done lol

I told them to stick it and sold the bike :D

Love mine - though think it'd be useful if the brake light staued on while it's engaged

Last year I had the self cancelling indicator function turned off - weirdly immediately after that change the hill hold function became much, much more sensitive - all that is needed now is a very gentle slope and slighter brake pressure to activate it. I assume that I must have got a firmware upgrade at the same time as the indicator change.
