I went out to ride the bike (800gs) today and the key would only go in halfway. Not up to it's nuts in the guts of the lock at all. I tried again and then jiggled the handle bars to free up the steering lock. Nothing. I tried for five minutes, turning the key round the other way, fiddling, poking, pushing. Nothing.
I went back to the house and tried the spare key...and the wallet key. Nothing. Phoned Ocean BMW where I bought it a month ago and they suggested 3 in 1 oil. Nothing. The seat and petrol lock both work fine so it's not the keys. It's the barrel.
The lock has not been fiddled with. Nothing has been poked inside. No one passes my house as I live in the boonies.
Ocean haven't seen this problem before but reckon it must be a dodgey barrel. Anyone heard of this before?
I called Emergency Assistance and they're on their way. I'll tell you what they say in a bit.

Update

BMW Emergency Assistance sent out a mechanic who poked around and came to the same conclusion as me. The lock's faulty. The same garage will pick up the bike in the morning and take it down to Ocean, in Plymouth.
Watch this space.

Hi Guys,

Czech made? I haven't got a clue? It's just the standard beemer lock, not yet one month old.

Oil in the lock over winter? Cheers, I'd not have thought of that.

mine recently had its 6k service and when returned it had been WD'ddddd in all locks:thumb2

during last winter I can remember the lock freezing but that was minus hundreds of degrees in my garage not the balmy on off weather we're having at the mo.

+1 for wot GnB sez:thumb

precautionary measures

Hi gbags,
Collected my new 8gs from Ocean couple of weeks ago too. All ok so far,but I will stick the WD straw into all my locks and give em a quick squirt in the morning.Hope you get yours sorted quickly.Good crew at Ocean at least :thumb
Hey Paddy, did you get a date to fit your Ohlin goodies yet :aidan

key won't go in

BMw bike keys have a very delicate tip which breaks off easily. Key will not then go fully into lock.
Happened to me.

Czech made?

MikeMike, what did you mean Czech made? Not everything that comes from "Eastern Europe" is bad.Chains for GS800? Iam sure they were fine for what they where made for.It was BMWs' fault(the way of cost cutting) to put it on 85bhp bike.By the way Iam Slovakian and if you have a spare minute try find on google or whenever you like where are WV Touaregs',Porsche Cayenne',or some of Audi Q7' coming from.We know things or two about engineering.By the way2, even if my bike is only 3 months old while I was in Slovakia I took it to my friend who has got a workshop to have a look how the bearings are and lubricate it if needed.Well.....The steering was fine:eek:,it even surprised me, the wheels were so so and more grease was applied, the swing arm bearings where a complete disaster....hardly any grease.Whose fault is this?Planning to send photos directly to BMW in Germany and ask them to explain. And of course I'll post them here. And ewerywhere else I can to open peoples' eyes.

OK, I got the bike back today. Ocean got the bike yesterday and had a fiddle (remember this is after the Emergency call out mechanic couldn't get the key in). They used a few other keys and eventually got mine to go in.
They advised me to oil the locks occasionally, but not WD. They reckon that grit sometimes drops down into the hole and clogs things.

Rado, no worries! It was just a poor attempt at humor regarding what happened with the batch of chains. I've got a CZ chain (not part of the recall) that has given me tremendous service for more than 13,000kms and has only been adjusted a few times (once because it came from the first service far too tight and I know specify do not touch the chain on any service order).
I doubt anyone in the world makes a pilsner beer better than you guys do!
