Michelin Pilot Road 4

I was going to my 3rd set of PR4's (Trails front & back) fitted last Thursday but due to a *uck-up by the supplier not delivering them on time then being told there is no rear Trail available anywhere for 3 weeks !!!!, I am having to have a pair of Anakee III's fitted tomorrow. Cant wait for them becoming available so will have to try Anakee's.

Looking at the Michelin site, these seem to be the "recommended" tyre for the 2013 1200 GS. Does anyone have any feedback / comments for having tried both types?

I have been impressed with the PR4's for road use only.

I've not tried the PR4's, but they do get a lot of praise, however, my current GSA, and last two GS's had Anakee 3's, and I've not had any issues with them at all.:thumb

I like the versatility of the Anakees, being able to ride on rough gravel with them, and also being able to get the pegs down with them on the road (deliberately:P).

I'm now worried that if I don't use Castrol oil and my engine siezes whilst doing 77mph on the motorway, and my clutch doesn't work at the same time as I didn't use Vitamol clutch fluid, and I couldn't manage the slide due to having a PR4GT on the rear that I'm going to end up going to prison for hitting a bystander who happened to be standing on the hard shoulder because I didn't follow BMW's recommendations with the companies they have done marketing deals with to be one of their fashion recommendations. A genuine concern I promise you. I do love my PR4's though....:D

If any tyre is speed rated for the bike it's on, and is being used for it's intended purpose, I can't see how a insurance company can refuse payout in a accident.

It seems scaremongering is the order of this thread. If you listen to the powers that be, you shouldn't ride a motorcycle at all.................... Far to dangerous.

The bmw approved list for say the 2015 r1200gsa is hardly comprehensive it only lists 4 or 5 options when at least 6 manufacurers have multiple options of tyres approved by them for the bikes and no doubt fully tested.
BMW approve the tyres they buy cheap and in bulk from the manufacturers and fit as standard

I don't worry too much about the legal 'worry stuff' but fitting a pair of PR4 Trails 3 weeks ago has absolutely transformed my GS-LC into something much better than it ever was on Anakee 3's

Try 'em they are brilliant, and they don't half improve the ride quality too, the bike just feels right now.

Oh NO i have had dunlops fitted to my s1000rr and they are not on the list.

What a load of bollox.

This thread seems to be drifting. The point being made earlier was that it is the tyre manufacturer's recommendation which is relevant not BMWs. Even BM admit their list is not definitive.

Anyway I'm very happy so far with the PR4 Trails fitted to my GSA (by the dealer btw).

Well, my Beemer dealer WILL NOT fit MPR4's of any kind, to my 13 plate 1200 LC. Cititng legal claims against us (dealer) if you have an accident type stuff!!!!! had MPR4's on my 11 plate 1200S Multistrada and they were very very good.

Conversely, my local dealer (Chandlers, Brighton) are quite happy to supply and fit PR4's to my 2014 GSA LC. Sounds like you need to try a different dealer.

Interesting conversation yesterday when I booked my gsa in for service next month, mentioned that I was going to change the Annakee's to either PR4's or Trailsmart's , dealer stated that even if the tyres were approved by the manufacturer if they were not on the BMW approved list they would not fit them to the bike (even at the owners request) due to possible litigation issues ?

I think it can be either a BMW or tyre manufacturers recommendation - what you shouldn't do is fit a tyre which hasn't been approved by either of them

My dealer fitted mine, although I supplied them, nothing was mentioned re tyre types.

If true I see that as scaremongering tactics by BMW and the dealers because they want you to fit tyres from suppliers they have negotiated a really good deal with i.e better margins. It's been the same for years with engine oils etc. Its more down to their profit margins than any concerns you think they may have for your safety. All tyres are built to a published specification and all bikes have a specification they must adhere to. As long as the tyre you use fits that specification then what litigation could there be? Same with oils....you don't have to use Castrol just because that's what BMW recommend as their oil specification includes countless other makes that you can use.

Sorry but as of 2015 BMW no longer recommend the use of Castrol Oils in their bikes and cars , if your bike has it in I suggest a trip to a dealer to immediately replace it with BMW ADVANTEC OIL..............actually it is Shell Oil in a smart blue BMW container that adds £4 a litre onto the price

And to think I've just put 4 litres of Fuchs Titan Race Pro 10/50 fully synth in (it was on offer from Opie) ....oh well, back to the drawing board.

Yes - I agree. It is just that BM's list is a subset of the tyre manufacturers so will be covered by the tyre manufacturers' recommendations.

Tyre choice is personal , I don't like the annakee's on my GSA! Done 600 miles want them off- don't do off-roading so want a sticky road tyre for hooning and annoying superbikes in the twisties!
Kawasaki tried the non std tyre thing on me when I came off due to a faulty gearbox, they also said I had non std brake pads I had ebc HH pads in as the work better than Kawasaki pads - they didn't argue , I had something other than Bridgestone 50's fitted BUT they can only recommend what you use, can't dictate!!
If the tyres are legal and suitable for the bike and what your using them for there no reason a claim would be rejected!
Fitting slicks for off roaring - obvs your gonna be in trouble!

I pointed out that the tyres fitted were the correct size and offered more grip and longer life to the originally factory supplied tyres there was nothing they could say!
