My 1200 GS/A has no real problems...

I've said it before and I’ll say it again, When I come home from a ride no matter where I've been I say to myself and my wife I LOVE MY BIKE.

Yesterday I clocked up 500 miles, got home a 8 o'clock and couldn't wait to get back riding "Bertie" (that’s what my daughter calls my bike, Bertie the BMW).

So you can have your moans and you groans, and people can slag off the dealers and customer service, the warranty, the cost of servicing, cost of parts. But at the end of the day none of that matters to me because I enjoy; no damn it I LOVE MY BIKE WITH A PASSION.

I love the feeling of freedom it offers to me and the feeling of oneness with my bike. I know how my bike feels when I'm riding it and I know if there's something not quite right. If you gave me a brand new 1200GSA it would never feel the same as mine, It’s a personal thing, an emotional thing.

Sure I had problem in 35,000 miles nothing major and every thing sorted by the dealer. Ok gearbox seal but I'm sure most people have had that done and engine cover but these are know problems and sorted under warranty. It won't stop me buying another 1200gsa.

All I can say is BERTIE I salute you, and promise to keep you in tip top condition, because you deserve the very best.

I am a happy owner of a R1200GS/A because:

I have an 06 (07 spec) GS-A and have done 26,000 trouble free and I love it because

Multi purpose: Done Morocco, Italy, Czech Republic, Spain twice and all points in between with speed and comfort. Been off road in some tough places and no problems. Did 200 miles on fire tracks and general playing off road this weekend.

Toughness: Been off a couple of times and it crashes well. Came off at 25mph on dirt yesterday and ended up upside down in a rocky stream. Damage? Head protector, screen brace slightly bent and pride. Incredible...

Presence: People know you are there (can`t really miss you) on the road and I`ve found most non riders like the GS!!

Reliability: Excellent with great dealer back up. Mine has to live outside and I ride it with "enthusiasm". Great mpg and no oil usage.

Design: Must of been good because the basic GS design has been around forever with the 1200 being the pinnacle.

Emotion: Just makes me smile every time I get on it because it does everything I need...and more.

IMHO, it is one of the greatest all round bikes ever built and even though there are some known issues.....I LOVE MY BIKE!

I am a happy owner of a R1200GS/A because:

Good thread and nice to see some positive things being said for once! So... I am/was/will-be again a happy owner of a R1200GS/A because:

I did 20,000 miles on my 2006 R1200GSA and in that time the only faults were very quickly rectified by BMW with pretty much no fuss. Toured Europe on it 4 times, then extensive off-roading, how many bikes can truly say dual-purpose and mean it?

Then got a HP2 because I had to get it out of my system, the boxer engine is like nothing else out there and thought it would suit my more off-road bias but didnt enjoy it on road, then wrote it off accordingly! If i had the dosh i'd have both!

Now i have a new 1200GSA on order for June and this one will be a keeper!

“ I am a happy owner of a R1200 GS because ...............”

I didn't buy it new
The rear wheel is easy to remove
The battery is easy to get to
The seats are easy to remove and refit
It's easy to carry out a basic service
Bulbs are easy to change
It easily does 50mpg
The instrument layout and illumination is easily one of the best I ever owned

I could go on, but...

...as you can see I'm easily pleased

+1:thumb
The couple of niggles that i have had were fixed quickly with out hassle from BmW. If I could afford it I would have an 08 but my 05 24K will plod on for a few more years.

I love my GS because it has never gone wrong to date. Ok it only has 700km's on the clock is precisely 9 days old :D

It is a fantastic ride though and I love getting on it to go to work every morning. It's a shame that I end up getting to work so early. Would love to just breeze straight past the office one day!

Cheers,
Delirious.

At the 12k mile sevice last month I complained vociferoucly that my GSA was getting rather dirty, the dealer (SLM) obliged and cleaned it

Angry of Maidstone

I complained last week that SLM (south london motorcycles?!?) clean my bike too often, and it makes my bike look unused (which with nearly 5K miles in only a few months... i do)!

I've now made sure they won't wash it, so I don't have to go straight out and play in the mud:D

I have had 5 BMws over the last 6 years ( 1200LT, 1150 GS, 1200GS,1200RT currently 1200GSA) each has done about 30,000miles per year.
My current GSA was new last August and has done just over 15,000 miles so far.

I have not had any breakdowns.
I have had 1 oil seal go on the RT at 15months old 38,000 miles
I have had corrosion problems ( particularly on the 1150 GS) which is bad they should be built better. Corrosion is a problem on all bikes but BMW should be better than most, particularly GSs which are going to see some rough work.

I have never had a problem with any of the dealers, issues have always been sorted out without fuss, and whenever there has been a delay fixing/servicing my bike. I have never been left without a bike.

In short I am very happy with the brand and whilst the product could be better protected against corrosion. I am unlikly to change Brands.

Until they do upset me of course!!

Yamahas and Suzukis previously owned.............
One recall on my MT-01 for swingarm change
Absolutely no more problems/faults in 30 bloody years!!!

Bmw presently owned...............endless faults in 30 minutes!!!

The handle Captain seems to be appropiate...... Captain of the bleeding Titanic.
Like his adventure (adventure, dont make me laugh), a sinking ship.

Wondered when Tekky would hijack this thread...still keeps it at the top where it should be.

Mate you make me laugh... I like your style:thumb2

Back on Topic

Oh yeah...I also like the fact that you can change trip readings without having to distract from your riding

Tekky tok a little longer than I thought..... I`m guessing his medication has been a little stronger than normal:D

It must be slightly bizarre having all that pent up hate for something. I reckon him and my ex wife would get along a treat:handbag

Well for someone that names themself after an American piss water, I dont think we can take your opinion very seriously can we?

08 1200 Adv had no problems what so ever in the 3 days I've owned it :augie Great bike :beerjug:

Wow - I have also now owned my 08 GSA for 3 days (380 miles so far) with nothing going wrong :thumb

Also had no real problems with my 06 GSA apart from a dud battery after 13 months. Great bikes which is why I keep buying them :blast

I love my 12GSA (6 months old), one minor fuel pump issue, fixed without fuss or bother, the bike is a joy to ride, inspires confidence, gets lots of attention, is the best vehicle I have ever owned, every other bike I have sat on in the past 6 months feels like a toy, it is also backed by possibly the best aftersales service in the world......hmm wonder if I can squeeze in a ride at lunch time :thumb

I love my 1200 GSA

Went out yesterday for a blat and the bike handles so f'kin well through the twisty stuff (rural B roads-National limit)at speed-it just gives you so much confidence. The bike is flying and this is with very tired tyres........

I love my bike-the day we part will be a very very sad day indeed.........
